Three Colorado police officers have resigned following the arrest and booking of a 73-year-old woman with dementia that reportedly left her with a "dislocated shoulder".
As reported by CBS News, former Loveland officers Austin Hopp, Daria Jalali, and Community Services Officer Tyler Blackett have all announced their departures from the department.
This was confirmed by Chief Robert Ticer during a press conference on Friday.
Despite Ticer not specifying whether or not the three men had been fired or quit, CBS states that department spokesman Tom Hacker later clarified that they had indeed resigned.
NBC News reports that 73-year-old Karen Garner has since filed a federal lawsuit over the June 26 arrest last year, which allegedly left her with "a dislocated shoulder, fractured arm and sprained wrist".
Garner's attorney, Sarah Schielke, later shared bodycam footage of the arrest, which shows the elderly Garner being slammed to the floor and manhandled by the officers.
Schielke has stated that Garner was stopped by Hopp after reports that she had stolen $13.88 worth of items from a nearby Walmart. The lawyer has since stated that due to Garner's dementia, she forgot to pay for the items - which were later returned to Walmart employees.
Additionally, Schielke says that due to Garner's dementia and sensory aphasia, she struggled to communicate with the officers. Throughout the footage, Garner can be heard repeating the phrase, "I'm going home."
Bodycam footage shows Hopp requesting Garner stop, before she shrugs her shoulders and continues on her way. Hopp then proceeds to take Garner down to the ground, handcuff her, and then physically pull her to her feet.
After failed attempted to get her into the car, Garner then had her feet tied at the side of the road.
Speaking of the now-viral footage on Friday, Ticer told reporters: "Our goal at the Loveland Police Department has always been to make our community proud [...] We failed, and we are very sorry for that."
Further surveillance footage recently made headlines after appearing to show Hopp, Jalali, and Blackett rewatching footage of the arrest and laughing.
Check out that footage below:Per CBS, that footage shows Hopp asking his fellow officers "Ready for the pop? and "Hear the pop?" as he arrested Garner.
When Blackett asks Hopp what popped, and the ex-officer replies: "I think it was her shoulder."
In response to the bodycam footage, Ticer said on Friday: "It hurt to see that."
"I've been in law enforcement 32 years, and what I saw in there hurt me personally," he added.
"That is not the Loveland Police Department," he said. "The Loveland Police Department is comprised of men and women that are out there taking calls for service right now, that are working very hard and honoring the community and servicing with integrity and value and being trustworthy."
