Trump makes direct comment to Renee Good's father after calling her 'terrorist'
In the wake of the tragic killing of Renee Good, a Minnesota mother, President Donald Trump took a more conciliatory approach when speaking with her father. Good, a U.S. citizen, was shot and killed by ICE agent Jonathan Ross, an event that has sparked significant public outrage.
Initially, both Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem referred to Good as a "domestic terrorist," following claims that she had attempted to run over officers with her vehicle.
However, after further scrutiny and the release of video footage showing a different perspective, Trump’s tone shifted when he directly addressed Good’s father.
During an interview with CBS host Tony Dukoupil, Trump said, "I want to say to the father that I love all our people. They can be on the other side. I would bet you that she under normal circumstances she was a very solid wonderful person, but her actions were pretty tough."
Despite this softer statement, Trump maintained his original stance that Good’s actions were to blame for the incident.
Protests and political ramifications
The killing has sparked nationwide protests, with many condemning the federal response to the situation. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey sharply criticized the actions of Trump and Noem, labeling their portrayal of the events as "garbage."
He accused the federal government of creating chaos rather than promoting safety. Protests have erupted in cities across the U.S., calling for the defunding of ICE and the impeachment of Noem, who continues to defend Ross's actions.
Meanwhile, political figures have begun to take strong stances in response to the killing. Democratic lawmakers, particularly in Minnesota, have pushed forward legislation to restrict ICE’s operations.
New Jersey state Senator Britnee Timberlake even drew comparisons between the actions of ICE and Nazi forces, stating via Politico, “Anyone who is an ancestor of a Holocaust survivor will tell you, this is how it starts." These proposals are gaining support, as Americans demand accountability for the killing of Good, a white American citizen.
Republican response and ICE's role in the controversy
In Congress, many Republican lawmakers, including members of the House Oversight Committee, have backed Noem’s position, voting against motions that would have compelled ICE to release records and footage related to the shooting.
They have largely echoed claims that ICE agent Ross was justified in using deadly force. However, the broader political and social implications of the killing are becoming harder to ignore as public opinion continues to sway.
This controversy has intensified calls for further investigations into the actions of ICE and the federal government’s role in the deployment of agents to cities like Minneapolis.
The debate has sparked a deeper discussion about the role of immigration enforcement agencies and the impact their actions have on communities across the country.
