United States Vice President Mike Pence will attend President-Elect Joe Biden's inauguration a senior administration official said on Saturday, per Reuters.

The news comes after current President Donald Trump said that he would not be attending Biden's inauguration himself, taking to Twitter before his permanent ban on the site to write, "To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th."

Joe Biden calls Donald Trump one of the "most incompetent presidents" in US history:

According to Sky News, the decision makes Trump the first President in more than 150 years - and only the fourth ever - to skip his successor's inauguration.

Per the publication, Biden has previously said that he would be "honored" to have Pence attend the swearing-in.

For his own part, Joe Biden has said that it's "a good thing" that Donald Trump wasn't planning to attend the event. Per the New Zealand Herald, Biden called the decision "one of the few things we have ever agreed on".

"It's a good thing him not showing up," Biden said, calling Trump an "embarrassment" to the nation.

Biden also said of the current President:

"He has exceeded even my worst notions about him."

The president-elect continued: "There are two ways people are inspired - by inspirational leaders and by terrible leaders.

"What this president has done is ripped the bandage right off to let the country know who he is and what he's about, and how thoroughly unfit for office he is."

Mr Biden also said that there are many Republicans who should be "ashamed of themselves" while adding: "But they make up a minority of the Republican party."

"This isn't about Republican-Democrat anymore. This is about people who understand what this country is about and the things we have to agree on and move together on," he said per Sky News.

Biden stated his belief that those who carry on showing their support for the president following his recent actions, should be "flat-beaten" the next time they run for office, adding: "I think the American public has had a real good clear look at who they are."

Per Sky News, he had also earlier said he believes the individuals responsible for the death of a police officer in the Capitol building on Wednesday should be held accountable.

Brian Sicknick sustained fatal injuries when a violent mob of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol. Five people died amid the chaos.
