Ashley Gil, 20, disappeared on Tuesday, June 17, after falling into the water near Deussen Park, PEOPLE reported.

Her body was recovered two days later on Thursday, June 19, according to the Houston Police Department.

The jet ski was reportedly carrying multiple people at the time, and officials say Gil was not wearing a life jacket when she fell, despite having worn one earlier in the day.

Her boyfriend, Jason Rogriguez, told ABC 13 that he was out of town working when he received a video of Gil riding the jet ski around noon.

In the clip, which he later shared with the outlet, his late girlfriend is seen wearing a life jacket. However, investigators believe she was not wearing it when she entered the water.

"My motive here is understanding everything that happened,” he told the outlet. “[I] kind of right away, right away got a sense something's not right."

Rodriquez said he heard from a man who was fishing nearby at the time of the incident, who allegedly claimed that there was little urgency from the group Gil was with to locate her.

“To be honest with you, they didn't even pay attention. They didn't even know when they lost her... where they lost her, they looked like they didn't even care,” he said.

Describing his beloved partner as “careful and cautious,” he added: “When you see someone that has so much potential, leave this world. This is just sad in and of itself, and it's hard to you know accept that she's not here anymore," cited by The Mirror.

The Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis released a statement on June 19 confirming the recovery of her body.

“I am deeply saddened to learn that the young woman who went missing on Lake Houston near Alexander Deussen Park has been found deceased. My heart goes out to her family, her loved ones, and everyone affected by this tragic loss," they said.

Deussen Park was closed on June 17 and remained closed on June 18 as police worked alongside search and rescue teams. The park reopened once Gil's body was located.

Gil's sister, Kathy, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral and other unexpected costs for the grieving family. As of this writing, the fundraiser has succeeded in hitting its $10,000 goal.

The fundraiser reads: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic loss of my beloved sister, Ashley Gil, who passed away after a heartbreaking accident on the lake. Ashley fell from a jet ski and, despite all efforts, she did not survive."

"Ashley was a bright light in the lives of so many, full of love, laughter, and kindness. She had an incredible spirit that touched everyone around her. Her absence leaves a deep void in the hearts of our family, friends, and all who knew her," the page continued.

“The funds raised will help cover funeral expenses and any additional costs we may face as we grieve and begin to heal," Kathy shared. "If you are able to give, any amount - no matter how small - will mean the world to her loved ones. And if you aren’t able to donate, please consider sharing this campaign and keeping Ashley’s family in your thoughts and prayers."

The Houston Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and is awaiting the results of Gil's autopsy to confirm her official cause of death.
