A bride and caterer have been arrested after allegedly serving cannabis-laced food to wedding guests without their knowledge.
As reported by CBS News, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said Thursday that 42-year-old bride Danya Svoboda and 31-year-old catering business owner Joycelyn Bryant were arrested following their alleged actions at a February 19 wedding.
During the reception, officials say wedding guests were served food containing marijuana, without being told beforehand. As a result, many of the guests became unwell.
Police were called to the 50-guest wedding party after one 41-year-old guest started to feel as if there "were drugs inside" him, despite the fact he had only been drinking alcohol and eating the food that was served to him.
More on this story in the report below:As well as feeling extremely unwell, many other guests at the reception admitted to feeling high. Some even requested to be transported to the hospital as they were vomiting.
Reports state how one server informed a guest that it was cannabis that had resulted in her daughter becoming unwell.
First responders helped treat many of the wedding guests and later reported that the symptoms being displayed were "consistent with that of someone who had used illegal drugs". Per an affidavit filed by the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, some guests did complete urine tests while being treated at the hospital, with results coming back positive for marijuana.
The affidavit states that one guest at the wedding told officers that she had seen Bryant putting a green substance into the olive oil. This was later served to the guests. After the witness asked both Bryant and Svoboda if there was cannabis in the olive oil, they said yes.
A piece of bread and a serving of lasagne from the wedding also tested positive for THC.
When questioned by officers at the reception, the bride and groom told authorities "with a blank expression" that they had no idea the food contained marijuana.
One of the guests later told NBC News: "You have to respect other people's free will and boundaries and option to have a choice in something like that."
Both Svoboda and Bryant have since been charged with delivery of marijuana and culpable negligence under Florida's anti-tampering laws. If found guilty, they both face up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine, per the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

A wedding turned into a nightmare after 80 guests were hospitalized and many more were left racing to the bathroom after eating a four-course meal.
The wedding took place in Cuernavaca, Mexico, with a four-course meal being served during the wedding reception.
Aranza Rodríguez, one of the guests, recalled her experience, revealing the distressing aftermath of what was supposed to be a joyous occasion, per the Daily Mail.
Rodríguez, who attended the ceremony as a guest of the groom, Fernando, shared her ordeal with Mexican newspaper Proceso, detailing the onset of symptoms that afflicted numerous guests.
She recalled arriving at the wedding venue between 8:00PM and 9:00PM and noticed that many guests were experiencing aggravated symptoms, describing a scene of widespread discomfort marked by headaches, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Despite the growing alarm, Rodríguez proceeded with her meal around 10:00PM, only to find herself among the number of guests requiring medical attention as ambulances descended upon the scene.
The menu included wild mushrooms with goat cheese and tomato coulis as the appetizer and chicken breast stuffed with spinach, tarragon, and sweet potato puree as the main course.
The presence of a peculiar aftertaste in the mushrooms raised suspicions, hinting at a potential source of the outbreak.
Disturbing footage circulating on social media captured the chaotic scene, with paramedics scrambling to assist stricken guests, some of whom were seen hunched over chairs, visibly unwell.
The severity of the situation became evident as multiple individuals were shown receiving IV treatment in hospital beds.
An examination of the menu revealed a variety of dishes served to guests, with options including sun-dried tomato cream, crispy goat cheese, and a pistachio and pear dry cream.
However, despite differences in the meals served to men and women, both genders fell victim to the illness.
Rodríguez recalled her journey to one of several hospitals, where a staggering 80 people were treated and subsequently discharged within a matter of hours.
Reflecting on the aftermath, she expressed gratitude for the support extended by the bride and groom, who have been actively assisting affected guests during the ordeal.
Grupo Paraíso, the catering company responsible for supplying the food for the wedding, are yet to comment.
This will probably be a story to look back and laugh at for the bride and groom, but for now, it sounds like a horrendous ordeal on what should have been the happiest day of their life.

Planning weddings are no small feat. Some couples sweat every detail of their wedding, worried something will go wrong: their chairs won’t be delivered on time, the flower girl will cry, the live band may be a bad idea. One thing you definitely want to be done well is the food.
One thing people probably don't see coming is 100 of their guests getting violently ill with food poisoning at the reception, and 22 requiring hospitalisation. This nightmarish scenario is exactly what played out at the 2015 wedding of New York state couple Jesse Abbott and Melissa Conarton.
Fast forward a couple of years (happy to see that they didn't take the disaster as a sign they shouldn't be wed), the bride and groom have now filed suit against their wedding’s caterer, alleging the reception’s mac ‘n’ cheese was to blame for the sudden onset of severe food poisoning.
Symptoms began immediately at the reception, taking place at the Arrowhead Lodge in the Oneida Shores Park, where a “red tarp was designated as the triage for their most dire guests”. Nine ambulances were dispatched to transport the 22 sickest guests to the hospital.
The local health department confirmed all patients tested positive for staph, a bacterium that is not itself harmful but which can produce toxins that cause food poisoning. The Centers For Disease Control says staph can be passed from a person to food if that person doesn’t wash their hands; it is also present in unpasteurized milk and cheeses. Food contaminated with staph doesn’t look or smell off.
Talking to local news, Jesse Abbot said: “It’s so difficult to see not only your friends and closest family, but when you see young children, too, going through this experience. It was terrible.” You expect a few people to keel over after a few drinks but a significant part of your reception after some mac n cheese is a whole other story.
According to Syracuse.com, lawyers for the caterer, Holy Smoke BBQ and Catering of Earlville, New York, declined to comment on the pending litigation. The couple is seeking reimbursement for their guests’ hospital bills so that no one has to “incur debt from their reception”. If this had been my reception and the caterer was indeed to blame, I’d be suing for a whole new wedding.
As if mac n cheese wasn't bad enough for you already, a 2017 study conducted by the Coalition for Safer Food Processing and Packaging entitled Klean up Kraft says that the student staple may be worse for you than you think.
The Coalition sampled 30 different cheese product items, representing a number of different food brands and varieties retailed in the United States, and found that 29 of those 30 contained a high number of phthalate chemicals, which are often added to food (or plastic) to increase their flexibility.
They're not currently banned by the FDA, but that doesn't mean they're not potentially harmful; phthalates have been linked to hormone disruption in boys, not to mention birth defects in young infant boys. Worryingly, mac and cheese as we know it was found to contain around four times as many phthalates than most of the other cheese products.
I like to think the caterers didn't use anything artificial in their recipe (thus allowing cultures like staph to grow) but either way it isn't good news for mac lovers. Use quality goods you know where they came from, and you should be okay. Can't have you not eating mac n cheese anymore, can we?

A mom has been charged with murder after her four-year-old son died when he consumed THC gummies in May, the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office shared on its official Facebook account.
Dorothy Clements, 30, of Spotsylvania, was indicted by a Spotsylvania County Grand Jury on Monday. She was charged with one count of felony murder and one count of child neglect.
Clements was booked on Wednesday evening and is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail, where she was denied bond, per officials. It is not known whether she had a legal rep to speak on her behalf.
On May 6, Clements' young son suffered a "medical emergency". The child succumbed to his injuries two days later, NBC News reports.
"Detectives from the Child Victims Unit investigated the death and learned from doctors that the child's toxicity level showed a high level of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)," states the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office Facebook post. "Detectives believe the child ingested a large amount of THC gummies."
According to investigators, a doctor told them that if the youngster had received medical care soon after the ordeal occurred, "it could have prevented death."
Police alleged that Clements did not seek help soon enough after he was found unresponsive on May 6 at the Fredericksburg home they were visiting, more than 10 miles away from Spotsylvania.
An autopsy found THC - the substance in marijuana that gets people high - was the cause of the boy's death.
Clements told investigators she called poison control after her son ingested half of a CBD gummy and that she was told her son would be fine.
While the case was being investigated, police said that Clements' statements did not match evidence found at the home in which the incident took place. It was there that an official was said to have found an empty THC gummy jar.
Clements faces up to 40 years behind bars on the murder charge. Her arraignment is set for November 1, per official records.
Poison Control says that "serious and sometimes life-threatening side effects can occur in children who consume cannabis edibles," and advises parents and guardians to keep any items containing marijuana away from minors.

One bride had the wedding of nightmares when she suddenly fell sick - right before saying I do.
To add insult to injury, she was then pooped on by her little nephew.
Hollee Lynnea-Kolenda Darnell, 23, made it all the way up the aisle before her Florida wedding went pear-shaped.
She and her husband-to-be Jackson were standing in front of the pastor when she began to feel queasy.
The pastor carried on officiating the service while Hollee squeezed her groom's hands, trying to signal to him that she didn't feel well.
But he assumed she was just messing around and continued smiling down at her.
Then all of a sudden things took a turn for the worse - and Hollee collapsed into her fiance's arms. He asked her if she was okay and began fanning her face. Hollee shook her head 'no', then tried to get out of the spotlight by going over to the edge of the gazebo.
Leaning against the pole, the blushing bride began heaving and threw up. Weddings guests chatted amongst themselves, laughing awkwardly while she threw up.
But no sooner had she finished getting sick, than some more bodily fluid found its way onto Hollee's fresh white dress.
Her sister came over to help her while carrying her little son - and to everyone's horror, the boy immediately started to poop. It was too late to stop him, and before she knew it, Hollee had poo on her wedding dress.
A video of the chaotic ceremony posted by the bride to TikTok has racked up 7.2 million views and over 530,000 comments.
"I kept trying to tell my husband I didn't feel good and he thought I was joking," she wrote in the caption.
"My baby nephew then pooped on my dress right after while I was puking."
In a later clip, Hollee explained why she had fainted.
"I was super dehydrated, and I hadn't drank or ate anything all day."
She added that having low iron and blood pressure makes her prone to passing out. Even so, she would have preferred it if she'd have gotten through the wedding ceremony without collapsing.

A wedding photographer has reportedly been arrested after allegedly sleeping with a guest and urinating on a tree at Park Manor in Weatherford. According to the arrest report, a member of the wedding party alerted an off-duty sheriff, who was working on security at the event about the woman's "inappropriate" behaviour.
Katherine Mehta, 26, who also moonlights as a model, was arrested at The Springs Event Venue in Weatherford. An off-duty deputy who was working as a security guard that night was told that she was having sex with another guest in a room, at which point she was confronted.
Officers asked her to leave, according to an arrest report obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, but did not immediately do so. Instead, she yelled at them, then walked up to a tree on the property and urinated. After she was arrested, she reportedly threatened the officers on the ride in the back of the police cruiser in her inebriated state.
“Y’all families will be dead by Christmas, y’all’s daughters are dead,” she supposedly said. “My dad is going to find out about this and y’all are ******* dead. D-E-A-D.”
She was later charged with public intoxication and obstruction/retaliation, and was released from custody the following day after posting bail.
Police believe that some prescription medication she had taken, mixed with alcohol, could have been partially responsible for her behaviour. However, a woman who identified herself as Mehta's sister told WFAA that she thinks she was spiked during the ceremony, painting what could potentially be a much darker series of events.
“She said she went outside and she said these two men tried to approach her and do inappropriate things,” she explained. “And she said she was yelling and trying to get help, and things got turned around in a negative way.”
According to the venue, the incident “occurred privately between two vendors unaffiliated with our venue" and was soon resolved. “Police officers handled the matter discreetly — no guests were involved or disturbed from celebrating the couple in any way,” The Springs Event Venue's statement read.
