People 'terrified' after man drops GoPro under cruise ship and finds out what lies beneath
A man who went viral for dropping a GoPro to the bottom of the ocean caught something harrowing on camera.
Not many people on cruise ships would think about throwing a $300 camera into the ocean for the sake of curiosity, but this is exactly what the internet is for.
YouTuber and content creator Odysseas Froilan decided to let his intrusive thoughts get the better of him, and it's paid some serious dividends.
A 2021 video simply titled 'dropping a gopro under a cruise ship' has amassed over 12 million views since its release, because who wouldn't want to find out what lingers underneath one of those vessels?
The video includes two different clips, one taken in the daytime and another at night - unsurprisingly, the biggest talking point comes during the nighttime footage.
What was found under the ship?
Froilan walked to the edge of the deck and lowered his camera into the water off his docked cruise ship, making its way down next to its anchor and chain.
The Greek photographer caught a peaceful sight in the day, with a school of fish swimming around the camera, in a scene that wouldn't look out of place in The Little Mermaid.
It's a soothing sight, but then came footage from nighttime, which required some extra lighting to give the video a sliver of visibility.
Some fish are seen as the camera is lowered, but things seemed eerily quiet.
Then, a shark comes out of nowhere, swimming past the camera, looking like it is heading on a mission or towards something.
That's not all, as another shark can be seen swimming nearer to the GoPro, slower and easier to notice than the one before.
Viewers were caught off guard and left shocked by what they saw, taking to the comments to share what they thought.
Viewers react to chilling footage
One admitted: "This was way more interesting than I thought it would be. There's something primally terrifying about seeing a shark emerge from the darkness like that."
Another added: "The way I went from kicking my feet in the air at the cute fishies and thinking ‘maybe the ocean isn’t so scary after all’ in the day footage to blankly staring, terrified, at the night footage, further confirming my intense fear of the ocean."
Luckily, none of the sea predators got violent, as users were both intrigued and terrified by what they'd seen.
A third said: “There’s something primally terrifying about seeing a shark emerge from absolute blackness. I’m sweating.”
"For years I wondered why there were pools on a cruise ship when there’s an entire ocean outside,” one viewer began. “This video made me realize that chlorine water is my safe space.”
All valid responses; who would ever want to encounter a couple of sharks, never mind one?
Odysseas Froilan shared how he captured the footage
One viewer asked about the equipment he used to keep the camera still, to which he replied: "This footage was taken on a GoPro 8 Black. The housing was connected to a fishing line and the original video was upside down.
"Custom rudder-like stabilizers were added on both sides of the housing. Without them, the camera was spinning endlessly due to the water stream and tension from the fishing line," the creator explained.
Another fan asked about the settings he used, to which the YouTuber said he used 'simple stabilizers' to keep it stable, while also 'waiting for a day with no wind and current'.
Froilan also revealed that he used a fishing line, revealing that the ship was anchored for a long time, as it was filmed during Covid lockdown.
"That allowed the sand to settle and get these clear images and allow the fish to be attracted by the shadow of the ship, and the food that the anchor chain was providing by moving the sand," he admitted.
