It has been revealed that nearly 2,000 women named Karen have joined a private Facebook group to fight back against the stigma surrounding their name.
In recent years, the name "Karen" has become associated and even used by social media users and major publications to describe a certain kind of woman.
More often than not, it is a middle-aged white woman who has hit headlines for complaining about somebody just going about their day-to-day business.
In fact, in 2021, Dictionary.com now defines the name 'Karen' as the following:
"Karen is a pejorative slang term for an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman who uses her privilege to get her way or police other people's behaviors.
"As featured in memes, Karen is generally stereotyped as having a blonde bob haircut, asking to speak to retail and restaurant managers to voice complaints or make demands, and being an anti-vaxx , Generation X soccer mom.
"In 2020, Karen spread as a label used to call out white women who were captured in viral videos engaging in what are widely seen as racist acts."
The backlash against the name has led to things like Karen Halloween masks and discussions over whether or not parents should name their children Karen.
But enough is enough, say Karens, as NBC-2 News has reported that people with the name are now making a case for their kindness and other redeeming qualities.
Watch one Karen discuss why we should stop using the name as an insult:Yes, there is now a Facebook group called Karens United that contains Karens hoping to change the meaning that is currently surrounding their name.
According to The Independent, the description for the Facebook page reads: "I don’t wear my hair in an inverted bob, I don’t give unsolicited advice, I rarely use coupons and I have absolutely no friggin’ desire to speak to your manager.
"I’m just a mom trying to cuddle my home, my job, and my family... I honestly want to know why my name is suddenly associated with all things middle-aged and uninformed. Is there a Karen who is responsible for this faux pas?
"Let’s hunt her down and reeducate her, but for the love of God, stop lecturing all of us."
Speaking to NBC-2 News, Karen Feldman says: "The funny part of that is the Karens I know, the real Karens, are pretty nice people."
Karen describes the people seen in these 'Karen videos' as "nasty, thoughtless, and selfish" - and these traits have now been associated to women named Karen.
She adds: "People are raw and sad and sensitive, and it’s time for us to start thinking about that."
Karen - who has rescued many dogs and cats in her life - says: "Let’s just try to use the words we have... It’s easier to be nice than to be nasty."
