A woman who says she was kidnapped and held captive since May has been rescued after leaving a number of notes in public bathrooms.
According to NBC News, 38-year-old Corey Brewer, who hails from Pittsburg in Pennsylvania, allegedly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend (whose identity has not been made public) on May 1.
He then reportedly held her hostage at his home in Spreading Oak Drive for several weeks, threatening to kill her and her family if she left.
However, the captive managed to arrange her own rescue by leaving scraps of paper with appeals to help in the public restrooms she was allowed to visit by her purported abuser.
The first of these was discovered in a branch of the grocery store chain Walmart in Carnegie on Thursday, July 8. This note detailed that the victim had been sexually and physically assaulted, and urged any readers to call 911.
This note also included an address, and warned any potential rescuers that the kidnapper was armed with a knife, and added: "If I don’t make it, tell my family I love them."
Police attempted to investigate the address listed on the note, but nobody answered the door. When cops tried to contact the woman on the phone, they were told by Brewer that she was on vacation in New York, and so was not available to answer their questions.
On Saturday, July 10, a bystander found another note in the women's bathroom at the Fallingwater museum in Mill Run; approximately 65 miles to the southeast of Pittsburgh.
This note stated that she had been held at Spreading Oak Drive and that she was not on vacation.
It also stated that she had heard the police knocking at the residence and that the physical and sexual abuse was still continuing.
This alarming message prompted a SWAT team to storm the property the very next day. She was rescued, and Brewer was promptly arrested.
He has since been charged by police on multiples felonies, including sexual assault, strangulation, and unlawful restraint. Police learned that the victim used to have a protection-from-abuse order against him.
Brewer's preliminary court hearing has been set for July 22.
