The wife of the missing submersible's CEO descended from a couple who lost their lives on the Titanic in 1912, according to reports.

Stockton Rush is the CEO of OceanGate, the expedition company that launched the missing Titan sub on Sunday (June 18).

As well as being the head of the company, he is also one of the five men who are onboard the vessel which has tragically run out of oxygen, according to estimates by the US Coast Guard.

The purpose of the expedition was to explore the wreckage of the Titanic which famously struck an iceberg and sank in 1912.

The Titanic set sail from Northern Ireland where it was built, though her maiden voyage is said to have begun at Southampton on the south coast of England, as this is where the first passengers boarded, per reports.

After stops in Cherbourg in France and Queenstown in Ireland, the famous ship that was dubbed unsinkable began the journey across the Atlantic to New York.

There were 2223 people onboard the famous ship, but due to the strong belief that it could not sink, there were only 23 lifeboats.

Onboard the vessel was Isidor Straus and his wife Ida, who were first-class passengers and amongst the wealthiest onboard.

When the Titanic struck the iceberg and subsequently sank on April 15, 1912, Ida refused to board one of the few lifeboats and opted to stay with her husband.

As reported by the New York Times, Isidor and Ida could be seen standing arm in arm onboard the deck of the Titanic as they waited for the ship to plunge under the icy waters of the Atlantic.

The couple was the inspiration for two fictional characters in James Cameron's Titanic, which featured an older couple embracing in their bed as their cabin filled with water.

According to the outlet, Isodor and Ida are the great-great-grandparents of Wendy Rush, Stockton Rush's wife, who is also the OceanGate communications director.

According to archives provided by the Times, Isodor's body was discovered at sea several weeks after that fateful night, but Ida's remains have never been located.

The wreckage of the Titanic was discovered in 1985 and was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2012.

Stockton is currently missing on the submersible and despite the best efforts of a worldwide rescue operation, it could not be located before the four-day oxygen supply depleted.

Joining the CEO of OceanGate onboard was experienced 77-year-old deep diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who had previously led an expedition to the Titanic in 1987.

Along with the two crew members was billionaire Hamish Harding, 48-year-old businessman Shanzada Dawood, and his 19-year-old son Suleman.

The three members of the public paid $250,000 each for the privilege of a spot onboard the submersible.
