An Afghan woman has given birth while aboard a US military evacuation plane.
As reported by Sky News, the mother started to experience complications while aboard the US Air Force C-17 Globemaster following its takeoff from an intermediate staging base in the Middle East.
The aircraft commander reportedly made the "life-saving" decision to "descend in altitude to increase air pressure" in the plane.
After landing at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Saturday, August 21, the woman gave birth while still on the plane.
The news was shared by the official Air Mobility Command Twitter page, writing in an initial tweet: "Medical support personnel from the 86th Medical Group help an Afghan mother and family off a U.S. Air Force C-17, call sign Reach 828, moments after she delivered a child aboard the aircraft upon landing at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Aug. 21."
In subsequent tweets, officials wrote: "During a flight from an Intermediate Staging Base in the Middle East, the mother went into labor and began having complications.
"The aircraft commander decided to descend in altitude to increase air pressure in the aircraft, which helped stabilize and save the mother's life.
"Upon landing, Airmen from the 86th MDG came aboard and delivered the child in the cargo bay of the aircraft.
"The baby girl and mother were transported to a nearby medical facility and are in good condition."
Replying to the tweets, one person wrote: "Welcome little miss Liberty. Your mama is your hero and the commander/crew are your angels."
Another added: "We are so blessed to have these stellar individuals protecting & serving our country and others so honorably. They truly are the best America has to offer. Our family is so grateful for their dedication and selfless service."
Earlier this week, President Biden praised the work of the US military personnel who are working to carry out the evacuation efforts.
Speaking at a press conference from the White House on Friday, Biden said: "As an American, I offer my gratitude to the brave men and women of the US armed forces who are carrying out [the evacuation efforts]. They're incredible."
