"At least" 11 people have been killed in a school shooting in Russia.
BBC News reports that the victims - including a teacher and several students - have died as a result of the mass shooting incident, which occurred in Kazan in the predominantly Muslim region of Tatarstan.
There have been conflicting reports of the number of people injured, but ABC News currently claims that, according to local health officials, 21 people were hospitalized with wounds after the attack, including 18 children.
The BBC reports that a number of news outlets initially claimed that there were two shooters involved in the incident, one of whom had been killed.
But officials now claim that there was only one suspect, a teenager, who has since been detained by police.
A number of videos and pictures of the shooting at school No.175 have since emerged on social media, with footage of broken windows and debris, and emergency services on site.
More graphic footage shows a number of terrified students escaping their campus by climbing out of the windows, and one young person can be seen dropping from the second story in a bid for freedom.
There have also been some reports of an explosion from inside the school building, Sky News states, with a video showing the interior of a school corridor badly damaged as a result of the immolation.
According to The Moscow Times, the regional prosecutor’s office in the republic of Tatarstan has launched an investigation into the shooting, in a bid to determine the shooter's motive.
Russia's National Investigative Committee has also opened a criminal case of mass murder.
ABC News reports that the President of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, has since visited the school, and stated in a press conference: "The terrorist has been arrested, [he is] 19 years old.
"A firearm is registered in his name. Other accomplices haven’t been established, an investigation is underway."
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences to the victims, their families, and to all those injured in the shooting. He has since ordered the government to revise gun regulations in the country in light of the attack.
