An explosion at a fireworks factor has claimed the lives of at least 15 people, with several others injured.
The tragedy occurred at a factory located in Suphan Buri - in central Thailand -causing a massive pillar of black smoke to rise into the sky.
The Washington Post reports that the deadly incident occurred on Wednesday (January 17), with the explosion being reported at around 3:30PM local time.
Approximately seven individuals sustained injuries, and were promptly transported to Chao Phraya Yommarat Hospital in the province.
While the fire has been brought under control, authorities are working to confirm the precise number of casualties and fatalities.
Kritsada Manee-In, associated with the Samerkun Suphan Buri Rescue Foundation, estimated that the death toll may range between 15 to 17 individuals.
The incident was captured on camera, with photos depicting plumes of smoke billowing into the air - with images and videos later being shared on X (formerly known as Twitter):
The cause of the explosion is not yet known as of this reporting.
The Washington Post reports that the explosion comes less than a month before Chinese New Year - when the demand for fireworks is strong.
Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed condolences to the affected families and pledged to ensure "full compensation" for them. "As for the deceased I would like to express my condolences to the family and relatives," Srettha said.
He has also ordered a thorough inspection of the factory's practices, emphasizing that any criminal activity or negligence must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law due to the innocent lives lost and injuries sustained in the tragic incident.
