What's going on with Facebook?

Facebook users have taken to Twitter this morning to express their confusion after their newsfeeds were filled with strangers messaging celebrities.

It turns out that thousands of Facebook users (myself included), have logged on this morning to find their newsfeeds full of messages from strangers to celebrity pages. (This has also served as a reminder that when I signed up to Facebook 15 years ago, I followed pages like Taylor Swift and Eminem. Don't judge me.)

According to DownDetector.co.uk - a site that offers "real-time status and outage information for all kinds of services" such as social media platforms - thousands of people have reported Facebook being "down" between the hours of 6:45AM and 8:30AM.

The graph below shows the sudden spike in reports:

Per user reports to the site, 43% of users are experiencing issues with the app, 40% are having problems specifically with their feed, and 16% have reported issues affecting the website.

And what else is there to do when Facebook is down but take to Twitter and complain about it?

In fact, Twitter has been flooded with posts from social media users revealing that they're all experiencing the same bizarre issue.

"Not just my Facebook newsfeed that’s filled with posts from random people then? My timeline is currently teaming with posts to Mo Salah and Johnny Depp," one person wrote.

A second took solace in being able to go to Twitter, writing: "I enjoy that when one social media app is in complete disarray, I can jump onto a different one and see the chaos affecting other people in real-time.

"I don't know what's up with Facebook currently, but holy s**t is the timeline feed a disaster right now."

Another asked: "Is anyone else seeing every single post to random celebrities on Facebook right now??"

Others shared screenshots from their newsfeeds:

And, as expected, there are memes:

In fact, as of this writing, the hashtag '#FacebookHacked' is currently trending on Twitter.

Per Metro, Facebook is yet to have made an official comment on the situation, but add that it is "unlikely" the social media giant has been hacked.

So I guess we're all going to have to wait patiently and ride this one out.
