Now that Donald Trump has seized control of Venezuela and captured President Nicolás Maduro, some believe that he might have his eye on a few other countries, too.
It’s not just Greenland - although he is keen on that - other countries might need to keep an eye on the situation too.
Four countries that Donald Trump could attempt to take over
1. Cuba
First up, and one that he has spoken about a few times, is Cuba.
Cuba is in the Caribbean - near the Gulf of America, as Trump likes to call it - and has been a longstanding concern for various Presidents of the USA.
It all started back in the 1950s and the Cuban Missile Crisis, when the communist government invited the Soviet Union to store missiles there, right on America’s doorstep.
That eventually didn’t come to anything, but it fomented a feeling of mistrust between the USA and Cuba that Trump clearly shares.
There is already a US naval base on Cuba, as well as Guantanamo Bay, but that hasn’t helped relations too much.
Trump recently said that the government of Cuba was ‘ready to fall’ as it was close to Venezuela and has now stopped receiving oil from them.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio - himself of Cuban heritage - said: "I'd be concerned, at least a little bit. When the president speaks, you should take him seriously."
2. Iran
It’s well known that Iran and the United States don’t get on, but things have deteriorated even further in recent times.
The Islamic Republic of Iran was struck by US arms last year, and in more recent times there have been protests against the current regime under Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Of late, Trump said: "We're watching it very closely.
“If they start killing people like they have in the past, I think they're going to get hit very hard by the United States"
He added that the US is ‘locked and loaded’ and ready to go if the situation demands.
3. Colombia
Colombia, as well as being a neighbor of Venezuela, is also politically aligned.
In fact, the country has already mobilised troops to the border to guard against any potential US attack.
What’s more, Trump’s narrative against ‘narco-terrorists’ has dominated his public remarks about the country.
Of the President Gustavo Petro, Trump recently said that he’d better ‘watch his a**’, adding that the country was ‘run by a sick man who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States’.
He added: "He's not going to be doing it for very long."
4. Mexico
This may come as more of a surprise, but Mexico has been hit hard by Donald Trump, who has threatened a trade war, as well as building a huge wall between the two countries.
What’s more, he created the aforementioned gulf, both physical and metaphorical, with the actual area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico now renamed in US eyes.
Trump has previously said ‘we’re going to have to do something’ about ‘very strong’ drug cartels in Mexico while the country’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has repeatedly rejected all US military action on Mexican soil.
It remains to be seen how Trump will act, or which country will come into his crosshairs next.
People of Canada, how are you feeling?
