Man spends entire salary and travels 1,300 miles to meet ‘dream woman’ before learning sad truth
A man who spent all his money and traveled over 1,200 miles to meet his dream woman has spoken out on the sad reality of his situation.
In modern times, technology often attempts to bridge a gap that occurs in the market.
For example, people wanted to talk to each other from the comfort of their own home – and so the telephone was born.
But in 2026, advancements in tech can far exceed the needs of those it’s supposed to serve and then cause harm.
An example of this is the true story of when bricklayer Edimar Rocha Martins tried to find his love online.
The man, from Imperatriz, in Maranhão, Brazil, says he met ‘Jessica’ on social media and their relationship soon blossomed.
In a bid to finally meet in person, Martins journeyed all the way to Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, and believed he’d be moving in with her.
However, upon his arrival on Sunday (October 11), he found out the shocking truth.
Jessica wasn’t real, and he had nowhere to go
What was supposed to be the start of their dream life together turned into the sad reality that Jessica wasn’t who she presented herself to be.
In fact, she wasn’t even a ‘she’ at all, but an artificial intelligence bot that simply sent automatic responses to those who interacted with her posts online.
Speaking of his shock ordeal to Itatiaia, he said: "I can't even say... Why do you have an app like this, right? If there is not to be a business like this, it is not even supposed to be there.”
However, it was revealed that he had been alerted that Jessica was an AI profile, and continued to engage with her and wanted to find her in a world where she didn’t exist.
He explained that meeting Jessica online came at an important time in his life, as he had been dealing with feelings of isolation and grief after the death of his mother.
"I don't want to stay in Imperatriz anymore, I don't like it there. I liked it there when my mother was alive. My whole family knows that," he said, adding: "Sometimes, loneliness at home ends up bringing a lot of inconvenience to our lives. That's why I came after her."
According to him, when Jessica told him he would live on her ‘farm’, the decision to leave his hometown was one he ultimately made.
Now, the bricklayer is relying on the INSS (social security) after he spent the last of his money on hotels in Belo Horizonte.
While his situation has been less than ideal, Martins has remained strong in the face of the scam.
"We suffer, but we get there... We stay in the situation, but we hunt for the direction, because the doors don't close, the doors open," he told the outlet.
Now, he says he’s no longer going to have a presense on social media after being caught up in the fake profile.
