Tragically, however, he was found alongside the bodies of two of his family members, after they went missing on a reported "whale watching" trip.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Mikhail Pichugin endured 67 grueling days adrift in the stormy Sea of Okhotsk, off Russia’s Far East, before being rescued.

The ordeal began on August 9, when Mikhail - along with his elder brother Sergey, 49, and his 15-year-old nephew Ilya - embarked on what was meant to be a serene whale-watching expedition.

Their 15ft catamaran-type inflatable boat was equipped with essentials for a multi-day journey from the Shantar Islands to Okha on Sakhalin Island — warm clothes, life jackets, flares, a modest supply of food, and 20 liters of drinking water.

Sadly, disaster struck when their boat’s Honda engine failed, leaving them helplessly adrift.

Over the course of more than two months, the boat drifted at least 625 miles. Despite initial rescue efforts, the Russian rescuers called off the search after a month, doubting their survival in such harsh conditions.

The Rescue

AP reports that Pichugin was rescued on Monday after being discovered by fishing vessel off the Kamchatka Peninsula.

As the Russian fishing vessel Angel neared his boat, an extremely weakened Mikhail managed to signal for help. Wrapped in blankets and visibly emaciated, he was spotted with a little orange flag he had attached to his boat in a desperate bid for attention.

The rescue footage captured by the crew shows a gaunt Mikhail whispering, “Strength is low,” as rescuers threw him a rope to draw him aboard.

As mentioned, Mikhail’s brother and teenage nephew tragically did not survive, their bodies found alongside him in the boat. The details of their deaths are not yet known.

But, per the Daily Mail, Mikhail has stated that he was able to survive after collecting rainwater and eating soaked dried peas and freeze-fried noodles

Now recovering and under medical care, Mikhail’s condition is described as satisfactory despite having lost half around 50kg in weight (110lbs).

Mikhail’s tale of endurance and survival takes a darker turn as he now faces potential legal issues. His boat was reportedly unsuitable for being more than two nautical miles offshore, according to Russian law, leading to a criminal case for potentially violating maritime safety laws. He could face up to seven years in prison, a harrowing prospect after such a dramatic fight for life.

The Russian Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor's Office has initiated a criminal case, and further details are expected as investigations continue.

Nevertheless, survival experts in Russia have been left amazed by Mikhail’s survival, branding in a "miracle".

Our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones at this time for their loss.
