Person who died at Dutch airport was an employee who 'intentionally climbed into the engine'

Dutch authorities have shared chilling details regarding the individual who died at Holland's main airport earlier this week.

On Wednesday (May 29), it was confirmed by representatives for at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport that a person had died after being ingested by a plane engine.

“Today there was a horrible incident where a person ended up in an airplane engine," they penned. "Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this. The Royal Military Police is currently conducting an investigation."

The individual was reportedly pulled into the jet turbines of a KLM Cityhopper Embraer E190.

The plane, which was carrying more than 80 passengers, was scheduled to depart from Amsterdam to Billund, Denmark. The plane had already completed the pushback procedure and was about to taxi to the runway when the tragedy took place.

Now, military police have provided an update on the individual who lost their life.

Per ITV News, officials have revealed that the person was a male employee of a company operating at the airport.

Additionally, they stated that the man deliberately climbed into the engine.

"He intentionally climbed into the engine, indicating this is a case of suicide," a statement from Dutch military police read. "Out of respect for the victim and their loved ones, no further statements will be made."

Officials from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines - the airline that operates the plane involved - shared a statement on Wednesday, writing: “A fatal incident took place at Schiphol today during which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine."

"Sadly, this person has died. The flight concerned was KL1341 bound for Billund," they continued. “We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol. The circumstances are currently under investigation."

"For further information – once available – we refer you to the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee,” KLM concluded.

Additionally, witnesses to the incident told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that they heard a "hellish noise" as the man was sucked into the jet turbine, adding: "Many people saw it happen."
