Authorities in Majorca have shared heartbreaking theories regarding the death of a student following her disappearance.

Student Agostina Rubini Medina had been missing for over two weeks following a night out with friends when her remains were discovered at a waste plant, per The Sun.

Agostina vanished after a night out with friends in Palma on October 2. What was supposed to be an evening of enjoyment ended in mystery and despair as Medina could not be found.

However, as the investigation unfolded and remains were discovered, authorities have now shared the chilling theory about her last moments.

Spanish police pieced together a sequence of events that led them to believe Agostina attempted to retrieve something from a large garbage can - potentially her cell phone - before falling in and tragically passing out.

The situation took a graver turn when the trash can was emptied into a garbage truck in the early hours of the following morning.

Authorities fear that she was crushed to death inside the lorry before her remains were possibly incinerated at the Son Reus waste treatment plant.

At a press conference on October 17, investigators shared their findings, supported by signals from Agostina's cell phone which tracked her movements.

In a devastating realization, a witness reported seeing her handbag beside the trash can at 12:13AM shortly before the truck arrived minutes later, The Sun reports. However, the witness thought nothing of the scene and could not hear any cries for help coming from inside the bin.

The grim timeline places her phone going dead at 12:52AM at the landfill site where the lorry arrived.

Ángel Ruiz, head of the National Police's Homicide Group, expressed the investigators' belief that survival inside a rubbish truck would have been impossible, suggesting that Agostina's death occurred en route to the treatment plant.

The last sighting of her alive was at 11:57PM on October 2, waiting for a bus which, tragically, she never boarded, per the the Majorca Daily Bulletin.

As the community reels from the shocking news, police are continuing their investigation, having found skeletal remains that have been sent for analysis to confirm if they belong to Agostina.

Our thoughts go out to Agostina's family and loved ones at this time.
