Russia has issued a new warning to the UK, targeting a small town in Suffolk, England. Mildenhall, with a population of around 10,000, is now in the spotlight after the UK's Ministry of Defence revealed plans to supply Ukraine with 120,000 drones.
This announcement was met with a stern response from Russia, which warned of “unpredictable consequences,” The Mirror reports. The situation has sparked fears of escalating tensions between Russia and European nations.
The primary focus of Russia’s threat is on military infrastructure, particularly RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath. These bases are crucial for both British and American military operations.
Russian officials have indicated that if these locations are destroyed, it could impact the flow of military supplies, particularly drones, to Ukraine. While the UK is committed to supporting Ukraine, Russia views these actions as a direct threat to its security, which could lead to further conflict.
Mildenhall holds strategic importance due to RAF Mildenhall, a key military base in the UK. Nearby RAF Lakenheath, which hosts American forces, amplifies the significance of this region. Russian statements have suggested that eliminating these military sites could halt the delivery of drones and other supplies to Ukraine.
According to a Russian statement (via ABC News), "The European public should not only clearly understand the true causes of the threats to their security but also know the addresses and locations of 'Ukrainian' and 'joint' enterprises producing drones and components for Ukraine on the territory of their countries."
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, also added weight to the warnings, emphasizing that European drone facilities could become targets. Medvedev posted on social media: "The list of European facilities which makes drones and other equipment is a list of potential targets for the Russian armed forces. When strikes become a reality depends on what comes next. Sleep well, European partners!"
In light of the mounting threat, some UK residents are considering relocating to safer areas. The Daily Express has compiled a list of towns considered less vulnerable in the event of full-scale conflict. Locations such as Aberystwyth, Barrow in Furness, and Carlisle have been highlighted as potential safe havens.
However, the focus remains on the immediate threat to military sites in areas like Mildenhall, which could be pivotal if tensions continue to rise.
