Spain train disaster leaves at least 46 dead and dozens injured after high-speed collision
At least 46 people have died and dozens more were injured after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain on Wednesday morning.
The accident took place just after 9:00AM local time between the towns of Mora and Orgaz in Toledo. A Renfe AVE train carrying 297 passengers and an Iryo train carrying 147 passengers crashed, causing two cars to derail and plunge down an embankment.
Rail operator Adif halted services along the route connecting Madrid to Andalusia while emergency teams set up triage posts. Manuel Galan, mayor of nearby Urda, arranged a sports hall to shelter the wounded.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he is "shocked" by the train accident in Toledo.
He said: "I remain in constant contact with the Minister of Transport and with the president of Castilla-La Mancha."
Sanchez added: "Emergency services are working on the ground to assist those affected and ensure their safety, in coordination with all the involved administrations. My affection, solidarity, and support to all the victims and their families."
