A Mexican sports journalist was caught up in a terrifying armed carjacking while broadcasting live on television on Tuesday.
Fernando Vargas was appearing on the sports program Bla, bla, bla deportivo for Mexican network Activo Deportes when a gunman suddenly opened the driver’s side door of his car.
Vargas had been conducting the live interview from inside his vehicle while parked at a gas station in the state of Morelos, south of Mexico City, according to reports from Awful Announcing.
Despite the frightening situation unfolding in real time, Vargas appeared miraculously calm as the armed robber confronted him.
Audio from the broadcast captured the suspect loading a round into the gun before issuing demands in Spanish.
Viewers also saw host Ed Martínez react in disbelief as the incident unfolded live on air, as viewers could only helplessly watch on.
Moments before the video feed cut out, Vargas could be seen exiting the car while attempting to de-escalate the situation.
Vargas gathered several belongings, including his phone, before stepping out of the vehicle. It remains unclear whether the suspect realized the entire encounter was being streamed live on television.
Fortunately, Vargas was not physically harmed during the robbery, although it appears that he lost several of his possessions, including his phone, car, and wallet, according to reports.
Martínez later updated viewers about his colleague’s condition in a post shared on Instagram.
“Thankfully, he’s safe, but very scared,” Martínez wrote. “If anyone recognizes the guy in the video, please help us and report him to the authorities. This happened in Morelos.”
The Sun reported that no arrests had been made following the incident.
This isn’t the first time in Mexico that a media personality has been targeted while broadcasting live, with a TikTok star shot dead in Guadalajara last year while streaming to fans, just months after a Mexican mayoral candidate was gunned down live on air during a public address.
