Teacher jailed over sex offence with student committed shocking act after she was released on bail
A former Sydney high school teacher has been sentenced to 15 months behind bars after pleading guilty to serious sexual offenses involving two teenage students under her supervision.
Tayla Lee Brailey, 32, faced Parramatta District Court, where details of her conduct and the profound harm inflicted on her young victims were laid bare before the court, ABC reports.
The educator pleaded guilty to four criminal charges relating to unlawful sex acts committed against two male students in 2024. Among the convictions was an offense involving the use of a carriage service to transmit and access child abuse material, demonstrating a severe breach of professional boundaries.
During sentencing proceedings, presiding Judge Elizabeth Ryan emphasized that a custodial sentence was completely necessary given the total breakdown of trust inherent in the relationship between a teacher and a student.
The judge stated that the behavior carried deep institutional consequences for the broader community and school network.
A breach of professional trust
Judge Elizabeth Ryan made clear during the hearing that criminal behavior of this nature damages the core foundation of educational institutions and community confidence. The court determined that the seriousness of the teacher's conduct left no alternative to actual time served in custody.
"Offences like this cause immense harm to the trust that must exist between families and the education system," Judge Ryan said.
"For these reasons … no penalty other than imprisonment is appropriate."
The court reviewed the timeline of how detectives intervened. Brailey was first taken into custody by police officers at a high school in Sydney during August 2024.
At that time, authorities charged her with offenses involving sexual touching as well as sexual intercourse with a person under special care.
Reoffending while released on bail
After being granted conditional release on bail following her initial arrest, Brailey committed an alarming act by reoffending with a second teenager. Detectives arrested her once again less than two weeks later, hitting her with multiple additional sexual offense charges involving that second teenage student. The prosecution revealed to the court that Brailey had personally initiated contact with one of the teenagers.
The court heard poignant statements detailing the deep trauma experienced by the victims as a direct result of the teacher's exploitation.
Judge Ryan read aloud from a formal victim impact statement submitted by one of the male students, which illustrated the personal devastation caused by the ordeal.
"He wrote that he has been feeling ashamed and had to leave high school before he finished year 12, because of the shame he felt," the judge said.
"He had suffered lack of sleep and flashbacks … he said none of his friends at high school speak to him anymore.
"It felt like his fault."
The outcome of Brailey's sentence
The defense submitted letters from members of Brailey's family, which outlined that her actions had resulted in the loss of her marriage, her employment, and her personal reputation.
A psychological evaluation tendered to the court showed that the 32-year-old had received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and was likely experiencing a manic episode when the criminal acts took place.
"In July 2023, Ms Brailey made terrible mistakes," the judge said.
"She used her position as a teacher … to abuse the trust of two young persons."
Brailey will be eligible to apply for parole on April 24, 2027. In addition to the prison term, Judge Ryan ordered that Brailey be registered on the NSW Police child protection register for a period of 15 years.
