Tennis stars flee court in Middle East after drone sparked fire in chilling footage
A tense situation unfolded at the Fujairah Open in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday when an ATP Challenger Tour match was abruptly canceled due to escalating conflict in the region.
The match, featuring Daniil Ostapenkov and Matsuoka Hayato, came to a sudden halt after debris from an intercepted airstrike caused a fire near the court, per The Mirror.
The UAE, a country now caught in the crossfire of escalating tensions, is one of the nations under attack by Iran following recent US-Israeli airstrikes over the weekend.
Drone Interception Causes Fire Near Fujairah Tennis Courts
An alarm was triggered at the Tennis Country Club Fujairah when a drone was intercepted near the Port of Fujairah, sending debris falling onto the surrounding area.
The falling debris ignited a fire in the nearby oil industry zone, forcing the immediate cessation of the tennis match and the evacuation of the venue.
The Fujairah Media Office quickly issued a statement regarding the incident: “Relevant authorities in the Emirate of Fujairah responded to a fire that broke out this morning in the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone (FOIZ), resulting from falling debris following the successful interception of a drone by air defence systems.
“No injuries were reported, the fire was brought under control, and normal operations in the area have resumed.”
Disruption Continues for Tennis Players in the Region
The cancellation of the match came shortly after the conclusion of the Dubai Tennis Championships, which managed to avoid direct disruption from the airstrikes.
However, the ongoing unrest has left many players stranded in the region. High-profile athletes, including Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, now find themselves unable to leave Dubai due to the grounding of outbound flights.
This situation casts doubt on their participation in the upcoming Indian Wells tournament in California, set to begin this week.
According to Spanish outlet Marca, Medvedev and Rublev are planning a daring 500+ kilometer road trip to Oman, one of the Middle Eastern countries facing lower levels of risk. From Oman, they intend to charter a private jet to either Turkey or Armenia before finally making their way to California.
Both players are scheduled to play their first matches in the competition this Friday, but the current travel complications may significantly disrupt their plans.
The Fallout from US-Israeli Airstrikes
The strikes, authorized by President Donald Trump, had devastating consequences.
They resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and sent shockwaves through the region.
The retaliatory actions from Iran have only fueled the already volatile situation, with airbases in the UAE’s capital, Abu Dhabi, being heavily targeted by Iranian strikes.
Dubai's Tourist Destinations Also in the Line of Fire
In addition to the military targets, popular tourist spots in Dubai, a major global hub, also found themselves under fire.
This escalation has prompted concern for travelers and residents alike, as the region's stability continues to be threatened by the ongoing conflict.
