Why dad's innocent photo of his family boarding plane gets them kicked off flight
A dad has revealed how taking what he thought was an innocent holiday photograph of his family boarding a plane allegedly resulted in a furious confrontation with cabin crew and the threat of being removed from the flight.
Jimmy Mitchell was traveling with his wife Pauline and their two children on April 3, 2024, when the family was boarding a Jetstar aircraft bound for Brisbane.
As they made their way up the outdoor stairs towards the plane, Mitchell decided to capture a quick photograph of his family to remember the occasion, but what should have been a simple holiday snap quickly turned into a nightmare, with the dad claiming a member of the cabin crew confronted him and called him an 'idiot'.
Dad shares his traumatic experience on social media
Taking to TikTok to share his experience, Mitchell described it as the worst flying experience he had ever encountered.
He said: "This is the worst experience I've ever had flying."
Recounting the moment the confrontation began, he explained: "I try and get on the plane, I take a photo of my kids … and the lady calls me an idiot."
According to Mitchell, the crew member repeatedly told him that passengers were not permitted to take photographs while on the tarmac.
"She was basically saying 'you can't take photos on the tarmac, you can't take photos on the tarmac'," he claimed.
Mitchell later explained that the aircraft was being refueled, meaning passengers had been instructed not to use their phones while boarding, but he claimed he had been wearing noise-canceling headphones and had not heard the announcement.
He also insisted there had been no signs or visible warnings telling passengers to put their devices away.
The dad said he was particularly taken aback by the way the crew member had approached him, claiming she could have simply asked him to put his phone away rather than insulting him.
Describing his reaction, Mitchell said: "I turned around in disbelief because I was halfway up the stairs at this point. I basically stormed over to her and I was like, 'Are you serious? What did you just call me?'
"If she had literally just said anything else, like 'get off your phone,' I would have done it," he admitted.
Explaining why he had missed the earlier warning, Mitchell added: "Apparently, they made an announcement, but I had noise canceling headphones, Pauline (wife) told me after the fact – I didn't hear it, there was no notifications about it, there was no signage, no nothing."
He continued: "All she had to do was say something constructive. 'Get off your phone, you can't have your phone out' and I would have been like 'sorry,' but she screams across the tarmac calling me an idiot."
The situation reportedly escalated after Mitchell challenged the crew member over the alleged insult, claiming she subsequently told him he would not be allowed to board and threatened that police would be waiting for him.
The dad was forced to return to the terminal, leaving his wife and children on the aircraft with their passports and boarding passes.
Mitchell claimed ground staff also prevented him from explaining to his family what was going on, leaving Pauline and the children confused about why he had disappeared.
"The way they treated Pauline and the kids and not allowing me to communicate with them what was going on, was completely unacceptable,” he revealed.
Jetstar confirm investigation into incident
Eventually, after airline supervisors became involved, the decision was reportedly reversed and Mitchell was allowed to board, but the experience had left him visibly shaken.
Mitchell acknowledged that some people might question his reaction, but insisted the way he had allegedly been spoken to was unacceptable.
"It's one thing that she was completely out of line for calling me an idiot, I can get over that I am a big boy – and you're probably sitting there going 'he's a sook' and 'he shouldn't have reacted that way' – but next time someone you're supposed to be a customer of calls you an idiot … you tell me next time how you would react in that situation."
Following Mitchell's account going viral, Jetstar confirmed it was looking into what had unfolded.
A spokesperson told News.com.au: "All our customers and team members have the right to feel respected when flying with us or when at work and we're looking into what took place in this instance."
