Following the news that Shinzo Abe had passed away after being shot while giving a campaign speech, many world leaders have shared their responses to the tragedy.
Abe - known globally as Japan's longest-serving prime minister - passed away on Friday after he was shot in the city of Nara while giving a stump speech for political candidate Kei Sato, BBC News reports.
Sato is currently a member of the Upper House who is running for re-election in Nara.
The Nara City Fire Department has revealed that Abe sustained wounds on the right side of his neck and left clavicle. After being shot, Abe reportedly collapsed to the ground after the two shots rang out.
A man in his 40s believed to be the assailant was tackled by security officials and arrested at the scene. The former PM was also rushed to a nearby hospital, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
Abe served as PM in Japan between 2006-07 and 2012-20, and many world leaders have now commented on the politician's untimely passing.
The United Kingdom's Boris Johnson tweeted: "Incredibly sad news about Shinzo Abe. His global leadership through unchartered times will be remembered by many. My thoughts are with his family, friends and the Japanese people.
"The UK stands with you at this dark and sad time."
Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also tweeted a statement, along with the message: "Shocked and saddened by the tragic death of former Japanese PM Abe Shinzo. He was a great friend and ally to Australia. Deepest sympathies to his family and the people of Japan. We mourn with you."
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his condolences on Twitter, writing: "I am shocked and saddened beyond words at the tragic demise of one of my dearest friends, Shinzo Abe. He was a towering global statesman, an outstanding leader, and a remarkable administrator. He dedicated his life to make Japan and the world a better place."
New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern tweeted: "So deeply shocked to hear about the past PM of Japan-Shinzo Abe. He was one of the first leaders I met when I became PM. He was deeply committed to his role but also generous & kind. My thoughts are with his wife and the people of Japan. Events like this shake us all to the core."
Writing on Facebook, Singapore's PM Lee Hsien Loong said: "I am deeply shocked to learn that former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo was shot in Nara Prefecture this morning. This is a senseless act of violence. Mr Abe is in critical condition and doctors are working to save him.
"Mr Abe is a good friend of Singapore. I had just hosted him to lunch in May, on my visit to Tokyo. My thoughts and prayers are with Mr Abe and his family."
Our thoughts go out to the people of Japan and anyone affected by this tragedy.
