There are plenty of trends on social media, but there are few online trends as heartwarming as the one which sees people recreating vintage photos featuring their own grandparents. So, without further ado, here are 30 photos, some from as far back as a century ago, which were given a modern reworking by some very ambitious grandkids.
[post_page_title] A pair of Hitotsubashi University graduates [/post_page_title]
This proud grandson was intent on recreating an image of his grandfather, and he wanted to do it to a T. And although there are some minor differences between it and the original - there's absolutely no denying the resemblance.

"I turn twenty in 30 minutes. For the last hour of my teens, I wanted to reproduce my favourite picture of my grandfather when he was my age studying at Hitotsubashi University."

[post_page_title] The apple didn't fall too far from the tree [/post_page_title]
Here are two very loving pictures posted by a Reddit user - the first is of said Reddit user's mum and grandmother (taken in 1977) and the second is of the Redditor herself and her own mum (taken in 2012.)

The photos were taken on that exact same spot on the University Of Melbourne campus grounds. The Redditor and her mum represent two generations of University Of Melbourne Graduates.
[post_page_title] Gamers across generations [/post_page_title]
So the first image was taken back in 1989 and shows the Imgur user who posted the pics as a baby with his dad and grandfather next to him playing Zelda on Nintendo. The second was taken in 2016 and shows the Imgur user - now a grown man - with his new baby while he plays Zelda on Wii U.

Like grandfather, like father, like son! There may be nearly 30 years between these pictures but clearly, not a great deal has changed. They might even have sparked a tradition that the little one in 2016 pic will recreate in a few decades' time...
[post_page_title] A timeless look [/post_page_title]
This guy's grandfather is on the left - the shot was taken at East Base (the oldest American research station in Antarctica) and the grandson's snap was taken fairly recently - he did not specify where, but we're assuming it's not quite as impressive as the former.
[caption id="attachment_69" align="aligncenter" width="650"]
"It was very difficult replicating the squint as in his pic he is squinting because of the sun and in mine the sun wasn't in my eyes. It took a lot of tries and some other pics I had the facial expression a lot better, but the rest didn't match."
Credit: snowystormz / Reddit[/caption]
While their lives have presumably gone in very different directions - there's no denying the resemblance between the pair. And I'm not just talking about that striking beard. You can see their determination and resolve in their eyes.
[post_page_title] Barbecue in the country [/post_page_title]
The original polaroid was taken in 1977. "Maybe by the time I'm his age I'll be able to pull it off without the beard," the son writes.
"It was very difficult replicating the squint as in his pic he is squinting because of the sun and in mine the sun wasn't in my eyes. It took a lot of tries and some other pics I had the facial expression a lot better, but the rest didn't match."

"My grandma passed away and the family decided to sell the house. I found a picture of my grandpa and me (circa 1984) in a box while cleaning and recreated it with my children."
Credit: 4shoot4 / Reddit[/caption]
In any case, both father and son look nothing short of dashing in their respective barbecue snaps. And, personally, we think the beard adds a nice vintage touch and an air of authenticity to the recreated photo.
[post_page_title] The doting dad pose should always be a thing [/post_page_title]

The guy then goes on to describe his late grandmother as a 'great woman' and reveals that the swing sets in both photos are exactly the same. Pretty incredible, right?
[post_page_title] Father/son traditions that never grow old [/post_page_title]
"My grandpa, my dad, and myself," the Reddit user writes. "Making three generations of wives worried sick."
[caption id="attachment_75" align="aligncenter" width="650"]
literally
Credit: Sandite5 / Reddit[/caption]
How do the babies in these snaps look so cool, calm and collected? Most of us would be wetting my nappies, being that high up before we'd even taken our first few steps!
[post_page_title] These photos were taken 69 years apart on the exact same street in France [/post_page_title]
"Standing next to my grandfather on the streets of Pleurtuit, France in 1944 and 2013." Okay, so he's not literally standing next to his grandfather on the streets of France, but with modern photo editing tools - he might as well have been!
[caption id="attachment_84" align="aligncenter" width="650"]
Credit: PointsGenerator / Imgur[/caption]
Being in France in 1944 can't exactly have been a serene existence what with all the World War II battles going on - and clearly, the grandson in the picture has a lot of respect for his grandfather for doing just that.
[post_page_title] This cricket player's grandson recreated grandpa's sporting ads [/post_page_title]
Cricketer Nick Compton, the spitting image of his grandfather Denis Compton, recreated some of his legendary grandpa's most iconic poses. It goes without saying that Nick wants to take after his grandfather in more than just the looks department.
[caption id="attachment_83" align="aligncenter" width="650"]
Credit: Phillip Brown[/caption]
Compton was born and raised in Durban, Natal Province, South Africa and is the son of former first-class cricketer Richard Compton and a Zimbabwean mother Glynis.
[post_page_title] Grandma on the left, granddaughter on the right - taken nearly a century apart [/post_page_title]
"Recreated my Great-Grandmother's 1918 Portrait," the Reddit user writes.
Just look at how authentically 1918 her recreated pic looks. And, as ever, the resemblance is striking.
[caption id="attachment_82" align="aligncenter" width="650"]
Credit: Taintlyn / Reddit[/caption]
Both pictures are striking in their own individual ways. It's a shame that a shot from the generation in between wasn't included.
[post_page_title] The classic 'sitting on a bonnet' shot [/post_page_title]
"Friend recreated her grandmother's picture - 69 years later," the person who posted the sentimental snaps wrote."
Both women look absolutely beautiful in their respective car bonnet shots!
[caption id="attachment_81" align="aligncenter" width="650"]
"It was common to paint over black and white photo's at the time and looks like it may have been the case in this picture."

[post_page_title] They trained in exactly the same place - just 100 years apart [/post_page_title]
"My great grandfather and I trained at the same location, exactly 100 years apart. He left for France shortly after this was taken in 1917.We both trained at the same site in Louisiana... Great Grand-Daddy was in the First Mississippi Cavalry, which was reassigned as the 114 Ammunition Train."

"I have about 10 pages of transcripts where he talks about his time in the Army... makes me grateful for modern living conditions and medical treatment."

[post_page_title] How are they not the same person?! [/post_page_title]
And the great-great-grandson totally agrees! "Apparently, I bear some resemblance to my great-great-grandfather," he writes.
[caption id="attachment_79" align="aligncenter" width="650"]

We know that traits sometimes skip a generation - but my god, the resemblance is a striking one!
[post_page_title] Okay, the resemblance is too uncanny! [/post_page_title]
The Reddit user's grandfather is on the right and the photo was taken in 1965. The recreated photo was taken in 2016. While their attire may be quite a bit different, they are very similar in the looks department.
[caption id="attachment_78" align="aligncenter" width="650"]
"The older man in the left pick is grandpa's stepdad, Tom. Grandpa is the toddler. My grandpa was born out of wedlock and didn't really know his biological father. His mother married Tom when my grandpa was five years old (he's around four in the photo) and he was sent off to live with his nan while his mother and Tom started a new life together."
Credit: datguynamedjoe / Reddit[/caption]
"I took this picture not giving a s**t about what I was wearing in the comfort of my home," the grandson writes.
[post_page_title] Like grandfather, like grandson [/post_page_title]
"My grandpa & my son with their daddies, 82 years apart," the user explains. "Standing in the same spot in Northampton, England. Behind the church where grandpa was baptized and married."

"They had three children that my grandpa was close with, but he kept living with his nan until after he married my grandma and had his first child (my uncle Dave). Tom was a cobbler who had a shop in the front of the house he lived in with my grandpa's mother and half-siblings."

[post_page_title] Both were taken by the Arno River in Florence, Italy [/post_page_title]
"Sitting exactly where my grandfather sat in WWII. 1944 vs 2014. Arno River, Florence Italy. My Grandfather Louis Wisotsky was a private first class, in the US 88th Infantry Division. My grandfather helped expel Nazi Forces from Italy. This is from the campaign at Rome-Arno where he participated in from January 22, 1944, until September 9, 1944."
[caption id="attachment_76" align="aligncenter" width="650"]
"I went into some of the stores on the other side of the river. Some of them were fruit markets, body lotion stores, gelato shops... I wanted to talk with someone older in Florence who might remember the war, but it was a very young crowd."

[post_page_title] They're wearing the exact same jacket [/post_page_title]
"The greatest man I know," the user writes. "My grandfather and I, 60 years apart, both taken at 23 yo and in the same jacket."

When asked why he didn't throw on a pair of pants for the recreated photo, the guy responded: "I live in FL, what are pants?" Fair enough, pal.
[post_page_title] The woman on the right and her boyfriend recreated her grandparents' photo [/post_page_title]
"My boyfriend and I attempted to recreate my favourite picture of my grandparents, this was the result," the user explains.

The shot of her grandparents was taken around 1927. They grew up in the same small town in South Carolina and got married as teenagers.
[post_page_title] A Heartwarming Tribute [/post_page_title]
This Redditor did an incredible job of recreating his grandfather's portrait, and you can really tell they're related from their stunning smile.

From the spectacles to the tie, I'm sure this grandpa would be proud of the man his grandson has become! Here's to looking great for generations to come!
[post_page_title] A great grandmother and granddaughter, 80 years apart. [/post_page_title]
I know this is sounding like a broken record by now - but the resemblance is uncanny! They even have the same facial expression...

We wonder if great grandmother ever got to meet her little lookalike?
[post_page_title] A badass grandpa and his grandson [/post_page_title]
On the left: "Myself when I graduated from college and my grandpa around the same age. So I not only hope to be like him when I'm older, I'm probably going to look a whole lot like him when I'm older as well."

On the right: "This is my grandpa. He is the most badass individual that I have ever met and I'm creating this post to briefly outline how badass he is, and provide reasons as to why he is who I want to be when I'm older."
[post_page_title] A current soldier and WWII veteran [/post_page_title]
"Here is a side by side picture of my Grandfather (World War II) and myself (Current War)."

"Apparently we both can't tie a straight tie; runs in the family. I'm not sure how long he was in but I think that picture was taken early in his service. I've been in for five years."
[post_page_title] Grandma in 1949 and granddaughter in 2015 [/post_page_title]
"It's my Grandma's 79th Birthday today," the user writes. "Here's her in 1949 vs Me in 2015."

That hairdo will never go out of style - not in 1949 and not in 2015.
[post_page_title] A recreated wedding photo [/post_page_title]
"Recreated my grandparents' wedding photo from 1954 at our own wedding on Friday."
[caption id="attachment_98" align="aligncenter" width="605"]
"This one is a tribute to my grandmother and a study in family resemblance. I miss my grandmother and creating this image brought us together again. In a permanent way. I didn't want to dishonour who she was or the individual characteristics that made her so wonderful, but I can claim this woman, so a melded portrait of the two of us felt really good to me. She is mine, and I am hers, and this portrait is in her honour."
Credit: akaRoger[/caption]
Apparently, dragging a bride in a wagon isn't actually a tradition, the user explains: "My grandparents are the only ones I'd seen do it, and I'm actually a wedding photographer."
[post_page_title] Grandmother Mary Alice Mcafee at age 16 (1944) on the left and granddaughter (2015) on the right [/post_page_title]

"As I grew up, though, I started to be amazed at how much I did look like her, and even today, in my late 30s, I see a lot of resemblance to her at this same age. I was always flattered with the comparison because she was beautiful and exotic (and really maybe the coolest woman I've ever known)."

Plus, they're wearing the exact same outfit (well, pretty much) with the exact same chain and hairdo!
