The Golden Globes are less than a month away, and there's already been a frenzy of discussion about what will happen this time around. It's the first big film and television awards night since Hollywood has been shaken up by countless stories of sexual harassment and assault, and so people are wondering what's going to be said, who and what is going to be excluded, and how the monumental industry event will move forward in this turbulent new environment.
Just earlier this week, Entertainment Weekly reported that a large number of actresses, including Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone, were all planning to wear all-black outfits in a silent protest against sexual harassment and assault against women in Hollywood.
A source told Entertainment Weekly that the black dress protest began as a conversation between a couple of the actresses, but grew quickly as more people heard about it.
"This movement is spreading rampantly and pretty much all the nominated women and others attending are participating," the source said. "All the stylists who already did fittings are now changing out their clients’ original picks for Globes."
But one actress who is not standing for this gesture is none other than Rose McGowan, who has been one of the most vocal women to speak out against Harvey Weinstein, whom she accused of raping her.
The always feisty 44-year-old took to Twitter to declare the black dress protest as merely superficial, calling the women taking part in it 'hypocrites'. She targeted Meryl Streep in particular, who has worked with Weinstein (who she here dubs "The Pig Monster"), slamming Streep for allegedly staying quiet about the disgraced movie producer. She wrote:
"Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black [at the] @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa."
Marchesa, of course, is the fashion brand run by Weinstein’s estranged wife, Georgina Chapman. It was suggested by many actresses that they were bullied by Chapman and Weinstein over the years and forced to wear the label to red carpet events.

McGowan's tweet claims their protest will bring "no real change" and slams the actresses for taking part in what she thinks is a hypocritical gesture.
Some people are all for McGowan's damning statement:

While others are more critical of her words:

It's not the first time McGowan has criticised Streep in regards to the matter. Earlier this month, Streep responded to Weinstein's alleged misconduct in Hollywood by calling it an example of “disrespect” in the industry, to which McGowan fired back “no, Meryl, IT’S A F**KING CRIME.”

The Golden Globes ceremony will be held on Monday January 8 in the US, so I guess we'll have to wait and see how everything transpires then.
