You might want to look up at the sky tonight, as a meteor shower that has been dubbed the best of 2025 is set to take place.

Known for being one of the most dramatic and fast-moving meteor showers of the year, the Perseid Meteor Shower will offer up to 150 meteors per hour at its peak, per the Daily Mail.

The Perseid Meteor Shower, which has been active since July 17, is set to continue through August 24, with tonight being the optimal time to observe it.

While the Sturgeon Moon may slightly obscure the fainter meteors, the good news is that most of the UK is forecasted to experience clear skies, giving viewers a chance to witness the meteor shower in all its glory.

The Perseid Meteor Shower occurs every year when Earth passes through a trail of debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.

As tiny pieces of rock and dust hit the Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of around 36 to 37 miles per second, they burn up, creating the bright streaks of light we know as shooting stars.

The debris trail from Swift-Tuttle causes the meteors to radiate from a specific point in the sky, located near the constellation Perseus, which gives the shower its name.

Dr. Edward Bloomer, senior astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, explained that the meteors “radiate from the same part of the sky every year,” as Earth intersects the same debris trail during the same period annually.

As a result, the Perseids arrive with precision at the same time every year, making it a predictable and highly anticipated event for skywatchers.

If you're in the US, then you are in luck as well, because the Perseids will be visible to you as well, providing you have a clear sky.

NASA has said those in the US just need to look up at the night sky from 10:00PM, and you may catch a glimpse.

Sadly, there is also an 84% full moon forecast tonight, which could obscure the viewing for those on American soil.

Back to the UK, according to a recent study by Planet Cruise, one of the best places to observe the meteor shower is Black Down, located in West Sussex.

As the highest point in the South Downs National Park, Black Down offers stunning panoramic views and some of the darkest skies in the UK, per Yahoo!

The best time to visit Black Down is between midnight and 5:30AM, as this is when the sky will be at its darkest and most conducive for viewing the Perseids.

One of the best parts about the Perseid Meteor Shower is that you don’t need any special equipment to view it. All you need is a comfortable place to sit or lie down, a clear, dark sky, and some patience.

So, grab a blanket, find a dark spot, and prepare for an evening under the stars.
