As upstanding pillars of society, teachers are people we hope that we can trust. We hope that they will look after our society's children, that they'll teach and educate them to a high standard, and - above all - that they'll do their best to make sure nothing bad happens to them.
Unfortunately, some people in the education system abuse their positions, and we frequently hear stories of adults manipulating children and minors into inappropriate relationships.
Haley Reed, a 35-year-old high school choir director at Oldham County High School, Kentucky, was arrested last week after it transpired that she had been engaging in unlawful sexual contact with a juvenile student while on school property.
Reed, who is married, was apprehended last week after local law enforcement received a tip about her having a sexual relationship with a pupil at her school. After being questioned, the teacher readily admitted to the affair and said that she had slept with the minor eight times between the months of April and June this year.
The encounters, she said, had all taken place on school property - albeit outside of teaching hours. She was asked to provide a recorded audio statement about the incidents.
As a result of her actions, Reed has been charged with multiple counts of rape in the third degree, sodomy in the third degree (which can apply to oral or anal sex under Kentucky laws), and unlawful transaction with a minor (classified as anyone under the age of 18). It has not been disclosed exactly how old the pupil was.
This is not the first time this year that a female teacher has been charged with engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor.
In January, a 25-year-old South Carolina school counsellor was arrested after sleeping with a teenage student just months after starting her position at the school; and a couple of months later in Florida, a married teacher began a relationship with a boy who was just 14 years old.
One of the most bizarre cases was an Ohio teacher who engaged in sexual conduct with a student that she had legally adopted. Laura Lynn Cross, a 37-year-old woman, admitted to three counts of sexual battery after it was discovered that she had been sleeping with her former student (who was also simultaneously under her legal care), and was subsequently jailed last month.
Oldham County Schools released a statement last Thursday night after Reed was formally arrested:
"District administrators are aware of the charges against a teacher at Oldham County High School. We are cooperating with police during this investigation and the teacher will have no further contact with students for the remainder of the year.
"Further questions on the investigation should be directed to the Oldham County Police Department."
Her bond was originally set at $25,000, but she was eventually bailed out at $2,500. She is scheduled to appear in Oldham County District Court on June 27,and may serve up to four years in prison for the rape charge alone.

Considering we entrust them with the care of our children every day, we like to hope that teachers and those who work in schools are always upstanding citizens and pillars of society. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.
Brittany Zamora, a 27-year-old sixth-grade teacher at Las Brisas Academy Elementary School in Goodyear, Arizona, was apprehended by police last week after the parents of a 13-year-old boy found illicit messages on his phone. After investigation, it transpired that Zamora - who is married - had engaged in a sexual relationship with the young teen, and had been sending him explicit messages for at least a month.

Between February 1st and March 8th of this year, Zamora allegedly had sex with the boy three times, and also performed a sex act on him in her car. According to police, the relationship took place both on and off school grounds, and was sustained through multiple text exchanges.
The pair originally began flirting in a classroom group chat, after which Zamora proceeded to pursue the youth. She sent him nude pictures of herself, as well as some images in which she was wearing only her underwear.
Court papers have documented some of the messages sent between the teacher and pupil, which were only found after the boy's parents installed an app on his phone to monitor his activity.

The 13-year-old's mother and father have also claimed that Zamora's husband harassed their family after they discovered the messages. According to them, the teacher's husband said that Zamora had "made a big mistake, but that she loved the kids", and begged them not to contact authorities over the matter. He also may have threatened to fight the teenager's father, suggesting that the pair should "meet up" in order to "settle this".
However, the family decided to take it to the police immediately on Wednesday last week.
Following this, a second student came forward to say that he witnessed Zamora having sex with the pupil, and that the teacher had sent nude images of herself to at least one other teenager.
Goodyear police spokeswoman, Lisa Kutis, said that parents of schoolchildren should be wary of their online activities. "Parents need to be vigilant and know what their kids are doing online and on social media," she said. "These parental monitoring apps are so important."

In a statement posted on the school's website, Liberty School District interim superintendent, Richard Rundhaug, said:
"The safety of our students is our #1 priority. Transparency is equally important. We are fully cooperating with the Goodyear Police Department and will comment further at the appropriate time.
"This incident has been reported to the Arizona State Board of Education so they can make a determination regarding the teacher’s certification. Additionally, we have school counselors and school psychologists at Las Brisas Academy today to help students and staff members cope with this incident.
"The school psychologists and school counselors will also be available for the foreseeable future to continue to attend to our students’ and staff members’ needs."
Zamora has been charged with two counts of molestation of a child, one count of furnishing harmful material and nine counts of sexual conduct with a minor. She is due to appear in court this Thursday.
I don't really know what is going on, but for some reason, there seems to be an alarming amount of teachers engaging in sexual activity with their students. Whether it's the teacher who not only entered a sexual relationship with her student, but also bought him drugs, or the teacher who adopted a student only to engage in a sexual relationship and have his baby - it is certainly becoming a worrying trend.
Now, however, we have a teacher who had intercourse with not one, two, or three of her students, but four of them.
Jessie Goline, 26, who is also married, was accused of having sex with four of her students, including two of them in the same night. According to reports, Goline would seduce her students via text messages before taking them back to her apartment in order to have sex with them.
The teacher has pleaded guilty to the four incidents, with three of the students being enrolled at the school she taught at and another one being from East Poinsett County School District. One of the students is also reported as being underage.
On Tuesday, Goline was sentenced to 42 months' probation and will also register as a sex offender after pleading guilty to the charges. Goline claims that she thought all of the students were over the age of 18, but claims that she only learnt afterwards that one was "way younger than what he had told her."
It's reported that in one of the meetings, Goline drove home with a student from her class and then brought him back to the school for intercourse.
All of the relationships allegedly took place between January and April 2016, police said.
According to Arkansas Online, one of the students said that Goline had told him "how good he looked in class" and had proceeded to then send him photos of herself in her underwear. Another pupil alleges that Goline sent him a text message asking him to come to her house, and then they later engaged in sexual intercourse.
Goline was arrested back in September 2017 once the principle of the school she worked at learned of the allegations. She plead guilty to sexual indecency with a child and will face three and a half years of probation for her affairs.
While it's easy to spout the "I wish I had teachers like this!" line of argument when you see a story like this, the truth is, teachers like Goline have a call of duty that they need to perform and by engaging in activities of this nature, they are breaking that duty. Teachers are there to educate and protect children, not take advantage of them.
Hopefully, given the amount of publicity these incidents have been receiving over the past few months, teachers who are tempted to do something similar will think twice before they act.

New disturbing texts between a US teacher who was convicted of sexual misconduct and the 17-year-old boy she was sleeping with have been uncovered.
McKenna Kindred, 28, was charged with first-degree sexual misconduct and inappropriate communication with a minor, following her arrest in April 2023.
She would plead guilty to both charges, as the teacher admitted to sneaking the student into the apartment, which she shared with her husband.
The teacher was based in Spokane, Washington, at the time, and despite the case, she is still with her partner.
While McKenna wasn't given jail time, she must register as a sex offender for ten years, while also serving a year of probation and a two-year suspended sentence.
New messages have now resurfaced, over two years on from the teacher's sentencing, back in April 2024.
McKenna's texts to the 17-year-old featured several inappropriate claims, and more claims have unravelled recently.
The Daily Mail has discovered more details about her crimes via a records request made to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.
One of these involved the teacher admitting that her husband, Kyle Kindred, warned her about her "hot" looks and how they may cause issues at work.
She also complained about her husband, who is still living with her, in detail.
When asked by the student if her husband got "mad" at her, the teacher replied: "Haha not like mad mad, more like 'you need to be careful. You're hot and kids know it and you can get in trouble if you're not careful,'" according to police records.
This would come to the fore in November 2022, with the teacher have a "sex marathon" with the 17-year-old in question, in her marital bed while Kyle was away on a hunting trip out of town.
The teenager's mother would report the sexual encounter to the police just one month after it unfolded.
McKenna sent many texts to the boy, a student at Central Valley High School, about her husband.
The police files revealed that she complained to the teen about her bad mood, writing: "I'm not grumpy till he gets home. So you help me more than you know."
She then went on to explain a petty argument she'd had with Kyle that took place once he arrived home, telling him she was glad she was being "pleasant tonight and not grumpy with me."
Apparently, she and Kyle argued until he suggested that they go to Wendy's for dinner, as she wrote: "So we got there and I said 'don't order yet, I don't know what I want', and then he started ordering and so then he was like 'what do you want?'
"And I said 'I have no clue! I said wait a minute', and he said 'okay drama, what do you want', then I said 'nothing, I'll eat something at home.'"
She ended up going home without eating, according to the texts.

A high school teacher has pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct after being accused of having sex with one of her students.
Jocelyn Sanroman, an educator from Michigan, admitted to having sex with a student she had been tutoring, and filming the sexual encounters.
She is now facing four to 15 years in prison, following her sentencing on Tuesday (April 28) at Oakland County Circuit Court.
Sanroman, 27, was arrested in June 2025 after charges were brought against her in relation to a sexual relationship she had with a 16-year-old student in 2023.
The teacher was working at Oakside Prep Academy in Waterford Township when she had intercourse with one of the students she was tutoring.
The judge presiding over her case said that she then recorded these encounters with the teenager, which took place at his home.
When admitting that she was guilty, the teacher admitted that it was not her "best thinking" when it came to her actions.
An investigation was launched into the teacher's actions after she confessed about the relationship with the student to a different teacher.
They then contacted authorities, and when a judge asked the teacher about what she was thinking, she replied: "Not my best thinking."
The judge went on: "This is serious risk-taking behavior, taking advantage of a minor and videotaping,
"You're having sex with a minor at his home, right? And it's just disgusting."
Sanroman's attorney claimed that she has unaddressed mental health issues, according to FOX 2.
The defense attorney claimed: "She made a tremendous error of judgment here. A lot of it has to do with her own mental health issues,
"She's going to have to undertake that on her own. She understands that, and she's working forward and trying to do her best to become a better person."
The prosecutor read a victim impact statement written by the victim's mother, who said that her family's lives will never be the same.
It read: "I watched my son's name be publicly judged and criticized for circumstances involving a minor and an adult,
"I have watched my son change. He has become withdrawn and avoids people because of the fear and attention the situation has created. I had pulled him out of school to place him into online schooling.
"His normal life, his education, his routine and his sense of security was taken."
She explained that the incident has left her with "constant fear and anxiety" for not just him, but other children, too.
Sanroman must now register as a sex offender for life.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald spoke after the teacher had her arraignment last year, saying that she was "accused of using her position of authority to exploit a minor victim."
McDonald explained: "As a former teacher myself, I applaud the teacher who contacted police about this situation, protecting other students from further exploitation."
She said that a school is where kids should feel safe, while officials from the school said they took action as soon as they learned of allegations involving Sanroman and her student.
