It has been reported that eight people have been shot, including a four-year-old child, in what has been described as a "random attack" at a Michigan water park.

According to multiple reports, a gunman opened fire on a Michigan splash pad over the weekend, injuring eight people with 28 gunshots in total.

The senseless attack happened at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills at approximately 5PM during the first full week of summer vacation for public school students.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard took to X when the incident initially occurred to provide people with details.

"We had an active shooter at the splash pad on Auburn in Rochester Hills," he wrote in a tweet.

"That is still an active crime scene and we potentially have the suspect contained nearby, but we asked for the moment people stay away from the area. We have numerous wounded victims. More to follow."

Speaking in an update after the initial report, the officer broke down details of the incident to reporters.

“It appears like the individual pulled up, exited a vehicle, approached the splash pad, opened fire, reloaded, opened fire, reloaded, left,” Bouchard said.

In the statement, it was confirmed that eight people were injured in the gunfire after checking statistics with local hospitals - which is two less than the original 10 that were reported initially.

Bouchard also added that three of the victims came from one family; an eight-year-old boy was shot in the head and is in critical condition while his brother, four, suffered a shot to the thigh. A 39-year-old woman said to be related to the two boys also sustained gunshot wounds to her abdomen and legs and is in critical condition, he added.

The other six victims were all aged 30 and older, including a husband-and-wife couple and a 78-year-old man. All were in stable condition, as per a report by The New York Post.

After the shooting, the suspect, who was identified as a 42-year-old man with no previous criminal history, headed back to his car "calmly".

"[He] was apparently in no rush. Just calmly walked back to his car,” the sheriff noted before adding: “It appears very random. No connectivity to the victims."

He branded the incident as a "gut punch" to the country.

Officers said the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home when he was confronted by police officers.

Rochester City Mayor Bryan Barnett released a statement in the wake of the tragedy.

“I’ve received calls from the White House, the Governor, most of our congressional delegation, and mayors from across the county,” Barnett said. “This is a horrible scene that has been repeated too many times across our country... Unfortunately touching our city today.

“The Brooklands is a proud neighborhood and our city is equally tight knit and strong. We will be ok. I would ask all of our residents to continue praying for the victims, their families and for our community," he added.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer took to X to also express her sadness.

"I am heartbroken to learn about the shooting in Rochester Hills," she said. "We are monitoring the situation as updates continue to come in, and are in touch with local officials."

No update on the conditions of the victims has yet been provided but this is a developing story.
