Doris Aguilar, 25, had allegedly raised her concerns about Juan Cuellar, 51, to her family before the pair were found dead in what is believed to have been a murder-suicide.
Aguilar and Cuellar's bodies were found in a car in a gym parking lot in Arizona on July 7, and are believed to have been there for several days.
Local authorities told Arizona Family that they believe Cuellar shot Aguilar, before taking his own life with a shot to the head.
According to private investigator Steve Fischer, before her death Aguilar had told family and friends that Cuellar wouldn't leave her alone and that he was "dangerous".
Fischer is investigating the crime, which he called "sick and twisted", on behalf of Aguilar's family, most of who live in Honduras.
Aguilar had been reported missing on July 1 by her family and her car was found unlocked with her belongings still inside it outside the Christown Shopping Center.
Fischer told Arizona Family: "She did tell her family and important people in her life about this person, and that if anything happened to her, he was responsible. He scared her."
According to the private detective, Cuellar had worked in the same building as Aguilar until around a year ago when he was fired.
He is alleged to have kept sending her threatening messages and turning up unannounced at the gym Aguilar attended.
On June 27, Cuellar allegedly shared a haunting Facebook post which was seemingly aimed at Aguilar, in which he wrote: "Getting my Lifetime [gym] membership back. See you soon," according to reports from the New York Post.
The pair's bodies were found on June 7 inside a rented sedan in a steakhouse parking lot near the gym that Aguilar - who was known to be a fitness fanatic - had been a member of.
According to Fischer, Cuellar may have rented the car as part of a "luring scheme" to get to Aguilar, but doesn't believe she was killed inside it.
Fischer told the outlet: "What I’ve been told, there is no biological evidence in the vehicle that she was shot in the car, so it looks like she was moved."
He also claimed that Cuellar left a note inside the car to make it seem as though Aguilar had taken her own life, adding: "He tried to stage it to make it look like she killed herself."
According to Fischer, Aguilar's phone data showed that the handset was turned off shortly after 8PM on July 1, and detectives are currently trying to trace her last movements.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Rob Scherer told the outlet that investigators are using surveillance video from the location where Aguilar's car was found to piece together her final moments leading up to the crime.
Scherer added: "Surveillance footage is there [where her car was found]. Surveillance video is available where they ended up.
"Obviously, we have the technology to hopefully put the pieces together of where travel happened and maybe when they came together."
A GoFundMe has been set up to help Aguilar's family in the wake of the tragedy, and so far over $8,000 has been raised of its $20,000 target.
Our thoughts remain with Aguilar's family and friends at this heartbreaking time.
