Tamayo Perry, an actor and surfing instructor, has died aged 49 following a shark attack in Hawaii.

Perry had starred in blockbuster movies including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, and Blue Crush, had been off the coast of Oahu when the tragedy happened.

According to reports, an onlooker called the emergency services and told them they'd seen a man suffering what appeared to be shark bites near Goat Island on Sunday.

Emergency services arrived at Malaekahana Beach just before 1PM local time and brought Perry to shore by jetski, but could not save him.

Perry, who was an Ocean Safety lifeguard and surfing instructor, was pronounced dead by paramedics after being brought to the shore on a jetski, Shayne Enright, of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, said.

Enright added that Perry had started working with the Ocean Safety department on the North Shore in July 2016.

Ocean Safety staff also shared warnings of sharks in the area following the fatal attack.

Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager paid tribute to Perry, calling him "a lifeguard loved by all".

He added: "He's well known on the North Shore. He's a professional surfer known worldwide.

"Tamayo's personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more."

Honolulu mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry's death "a tragic loss", adding: "Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected. [He] grew up right over here, and just a great member of our ocean safety team."

He added that it was "hard to imagine" getting the call that Perry had been killed and called for Perry's family to be given privacy in their time of grief.

As well as his work as a surfing instructor and lifeguard, and his roles in blockbuster movies, the much-loved member of the community had also made many TV appearances in shows including Hawaii Five-0 and The Bridge.

Our thoughts remain with Tamayo Perry's family and friends at this difficult time.
