A teenage girl accused of murdering her mom was seen giggling during court proceedings.

Carly Madison Gregg is currently on trial for the murder of her mother, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, at their Mississippi home on March 19, 2024, as reported by WJTV.

Prosecutors say that the teen, who was 14 at the time, fatally shot her mom, a math teacher in Rankin County, in the face.

The 15-year-old schoolgirl is also charged with the attempted murder of her stepfather, Heath, allegedly shooting him in the shoulder before fleeing the scene.

A chilling video of the moment the then-14-year-old allegedly gunned down her mom has circulated online and shows her pacing around her home in a Nirvana T-shirt and dark trousers.

In the harrowing clip, Carly disappears from view before returning with something hidden behind her back, and peers into the kitchen. Shortly afterward, she goes upstairs and the sound of three gunshots are heard.

Following the first gunshot, a woman's screams, presumably her mom's, can be heard before everything goes quiet. Carly, seemingly unfazed, then casually sits down at the kitchen counter before beginning to text someone.

According to a report by CourtTV, Carly messaged a friend, identified as B.W, after the murder, telling them she had an emergency. Once they arrived, she asked them if they'd seen a dead body, and when they said no, she proceeded to show them her mom's lifeless body.

She also tried to lure her stepfather home by texting him "When will you be home honey," from her deceased mother's phone, per Law and Crime.

On Thursday (September 19), as day four of the trial got underway, Carly was caught on the livestream laughing uncontrollably.

Per pictures obtained by Daily Mail, she was watching a member of her defense team scribble something on a piece of paper at the time.

She then giggled and covered her mouth with her hand. It is unclear what the note read.

Gregg’s stepdad took the witness stand on Tuesday (September 17) and spoke about the moment he found his wife dead and survived the shooting.

“She was laying on her back with her arms over here and a towel covering her face,” he testified, per Law and Crime. “I knew that she had been shot, there was blood around, I’m not sure exactly where, on the right side of her face."

“When I opened the door to the kitchen, the gun went off in my face before the door was three or four inches wide open,” he continued. “The gun flashed in my face. It went off two more times, but my hand was on the gun after the first shot, and I twisted it from Carly.”

Smylie also said Carly, whom he remembered as a “sweet little girl,” looked like “she had seen a demon or something” that day.

Prosecutors had offered the teen a deal that would have sent her to prison for 40 years for the murder and dropped the additional two charges.

Her legal team said that she had declined the offer, and when the judge asked whether she understood what she was doing, she answered, “Yes, sir," per Court TV.

If the teen is convicted, she faces a potential sentence of life in prison for murder, 20 years to life for attempted murder, and 10 years for tampering with evidence.
