A 10-year-old child has died after getting trapped in the trunk of a car.
The incident happened in Victoria, Australia, at approximately 3.30PM on Sunday.
Residents reported that a young boy took the keys to his mother's car, which was parked on Gange Street at Mooroopna, 180km north of Melbourne, and climbed into the trunk of the vehicle.
His mother had allegedly been resting and later discovered that the keys were missing.
She went to the car and discovered the 10-year-old had died after being trapped in the back for a "few hours", according to a report by the Herald Sun.
Neighbors also reported hearing a "bloodcurdling scream" coming from down the street, but one resident was told to not go over and check in the fear that something else was happening.
Emergency services were called to the scene where they performed CPR, but the boy could not be saved.
It was reported that the boy had a fascination with cars which was the reason he went out to check it out and ended up getting trapped inside.
Temperatures hit a maximum of 35.5C in the area over that weekend.
Another local described the scene as "very sad," adding: "Kids in cars is not a good mix."
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the child likely died from a cardiac event, adding that the death was not being treated as suspicious.
A formal investigation into the matter has been launched with a coroner preparing a formal report.
