There are a few things being recycled from the 80's right now – high-waisted "Mom jeans" paired with bodysuits, big earrings and chunky jewellery, as well as most of what was blasted through portable boomboxes at the time thanks to the Stranger Things soundtrack. And now, there's something else making a comeback that you never would've imagined: the perm. We've seen the hairstyle on the "new" Taylor Swift, but if even her most recent do makes you cringe and hear Mia Thermopolis's voice saying "I look like a poodle" in Princess Diaries 2, then here's the good news: The perms that are currently in vogue don't necessarily have to look like the 80's kind. There's new technology around nowadays which means that the only option isn't just a full-on perm circa Cher's If I Could Turn Back Time. In fact, it's time to unlearn everything about what we thought the perm looked like, because it's had a seriously chic upgrade. Which is totally possible thanks to something called the New Wave perm. Think soft beach waves that the average surfer sports so effortlessly, rather than tightly coiled curls. While the New Wave, also known as the Digital Wave or a Hot Perm, is less in-your-face, the perms are still, well... permanent. And especially for girls with super straight hair that's kinda flat and boring, this modern-day perm adds volume and texture. The result is a gentle wave that looks natural, with loose curls to keep things interesting. It works by putting the rods/rollers (which are usually heated) into freshly washed hair, before a special lotion is applied. After letting the lotion set into the hair, it is rinsed out. The whole thing usually takes between 2-4 hours, and your hair can't be washed for one or two days after the treatment. But Legally Blonde already taught us that. For the results to look good, your hair can't be damaged or recently dyed and should be looking lush (i.e. use lots of conditioner in the weeks leading up), otherwise it won't be worth it. Celebrity stylist George Papanikolas, who's worked with everyone from the Kardashians to Megan Fox says, "It’s a great look to get an air-dried finish and a great way to give straight hair a soft bend and movement without additional heat and styling time." "There are also modern techniques where it can be straighter at the top half with the bend in the hair starting at the mid-length and ends. We’ve also seen a big shift away from the overstyled curling iron waves to a more natural air-dry texture." Time to book an appointment?

Emma Stone has undergone one of her boldest transformations yet, shaving her head on camera for her role in the upcoming black comedy sci-fi Bugonia.

The two-time Oscar winner, best known for her trademark red hair, shed it all during a pivotal scene in the movie. In the first official poster, Stone appears bald with her head covered in what looks like blood and honey — a striking departure from her usual image.

Last month, in a cover story with Vogue, Stone described the emotional process of the transformation.

“No better feeling in the world,” she told the publication. “The first shower when you’ve shaved your head? Oh my God, it’s amazing.”

But the 36-year-old admitted it wasn’t easy at first. Before filming the scene, she “burst into tears in her trailer” while remembering her mother, Krista, who had previously shaved her head during breast cancer treatment.

“She actually did something brave,” Stone recalled. “I’m just shaving my head.”

Krista, who has been cancer-free since 2008, was not only supportive but encouraging. “My mum was like, ‘I’m so jealous. I want to shave my head again!’” Stone shared.

In Bugonia, Stone plays a powerful pharmaceuticals CEO who is kidnapped by conspiracy theorists convinced she is an alien out to destroy Earth. The film is a reimagining of the 2003 South Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet! and is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

The project marks Stone’s fourth collaboration with the Greek filmmaker. He previously directed her in The Favourite (2018), Poor Things (2023), and Kinds of Kindness (2024). Their partnership has brought critical acclaim, with Stone winning her second Best Actress Oscar for Poor Things.

On the set of Bugonia, Lanthimos showed his support by also shaving his head. In her Vogue interview, Stone revealed she was the one who cut his hair before filming her own scene.

“When I knew we were gonna do this, I said, ‘You’re gonna have to shave your head, too, so that we’re in solidarity,’” she said. “We just kind of have to re-shave it every couple days. It’s not too big of a getting-ready process on this movie in the mornings, which has been nice.”

Bugonia also stars Jesse Plemons, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. With its dark humor, striking visuals, and Stone’s radical new look, the film is already one of the most talked-about releases on the horizon.

On November 6, Emma Stone turns 30. If you're older than 30, you're probably thinking, "Shut up, Emma. You're so young." And if you're younger than 30,  you're probably thinking, "Holy crap, Emma. You're so old." But whichever end of the spectrum you fall on, we can all agree your 20's are a tumultuous time. You learn more about yourself, and about life.

Recently Emma sat down for a candid interview with her good friend, and fellow Academy Award-winning actress, Jennifer Lawrence. Emma won the Oscar for Best Actress for La La Land in 2017. Jennifer won the Oscar for Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013. J-Law doesn't turn 30 until August 15, 2020, and I'm sure that that she's thrilled I'm mentioning that in an article.

Anyway, the two stars got together in New York to candidly discuss their lives in a feature piece for Elle. Emma revealed that after winning the coveted Oscar, she took a break from the business for six months. With the big 3-0 around the corner, she sat back in reverie, realizing her dreams are now "personal and less professional."

"My twenties were a really interesting time, and there’s been a lot that has happened in these past 10 years, both positive and not as positive. It’s weird how much turning 30 crystallizes your life. Instead of just living the dreams that I had in my youth and getting to do the job that I love to do and making friends and going through all of that, it’s like, now what do I actively want as an adult?"

When Emma was in her mid-20's, she experienced some major life changes. Her parents got a divorce. Her acting career exploded. And she realized she wasn't the same person she was as a teenager.

"When I was a teenager, I was in a real sweet spot. Then in my mid-twenties, I really lost the spot. A lot of things shifted, and it felt like whatever that protective layer was, that mask that you build for yourself—this is my personality, this is who I am—totally shattered."

Luckily, she has friends to pick up the pieces and make her back whole - even if she wasn't quite the same as she was before. "I think friendship is pretty much everything," said Emma. "Here’s another turning-30 thing I’ve realized: You pick your family. You realize that your friendships, the people who go with you into these next phases of your life – you’re choosing your family."

And Jennifer Lawrence, the talented actress turned irreverent interviewer, is just like family.  "You’ve been one of my most loyal friends for years," Emma confessed. "And I think knowing that you can laugh together and that not everything has to be such a big deal."

Yes, turning 30 isn't that big a deal. The most stressful decision is choosing the theme of your party. "Dirty Thirty?" "Nerdy Thirty?" "Dirty Thirty?" I'm sure she'll figure it out. Happy Birthday, Emma! You're so old, yet so young.

 

Sunday night marked the 90th annual Oscars awards, and - as could be expected - the event generated a lot of headlines. Emma Stone caused a bit of a stir when she introduced the nominees of the 'Best Director' category as "four men and Greta Gerwig", Meryl Streep turned heads when she showed up looking like the Fairy Godmother from Shrek 2, and the whole world was in shock when they found out that the fish man from The Shape of Water looks like a (relatively) normal guy in real life.

However, nothing generated more of a buzz on Twitter than Emma Watson's Time's Up tattoo - but not for the right reasons. You see, while Watson might have a knack for playing bookworms in films, it turns out that her punctuation skills aren't that hot in real life, as she forgot to include the apostrophe in her ink.

The decision to get a tattoo (albeit a temporary one) was a bold move by Watson, who has been outspoken on her views about the Hollywood abuse scandal since the news about Harvey Weinstein first broke. The Beauty and the Beast star has proudly worn black to a number of awards ceremonies in the wake of the scandal, has donated millions to charities that support victims of sexual abuse, and has even auctioned off some of her possessions in order to raise more money for the Time's Up fund.

Considering her dedication to the cause, then, it's just a tiny bit embarrassing that she managed to mess up her ink.

On Twitter, however, the 27-year-old actress seemed to laugh off her mistake with ease, and even joked that she would be hiring a proofreader for future fake tattoos.

This, of course, urged hundreds of fans to join in with the gag and apply for the position, with one Twitter user writing: "I would like to take you up on this job opportunity? I have a masters in proofreadery graduated with a 1st from Tattoo Uni top of my class".

Another fan chipped in with, "*quits job as a book editor to read fake tattoos for @EmmaWatson, has 'No Ragrets'*".

For a short while, people thought it was a deliberate mistake, as the absence of the apostrophe got more people talking about it. However, after this confession, it's obvious that Watson is just human like the rest of us, and is liable to a slip-up every now and then.

Plus, when you look at how Watson is used to using the phrase, "Time's Up", it's easy to see how she made the error. Most often, she tweets or 'grams it as a hashtag, meaning that the apostrophe has to be left out.

Regardless of the clumsy mistake, Watson certainly achieved her goal in drawing attention to the Time's Up movement - as did many other actors and Hollywood stars at the Oscars this weekend. And, while it is obviously awful that people continue to be subjected to unfair and abusive conditions in the workplace, it's good to know that this organization is finally working to do something about it.

As our society continues to move forwards, and our understanding of gender and sexuality changes, many women are choosing to rock the au naturel look.

And this includes women who have been viewed as hyper-feminine like Emily Ratajkowski.

Ratajkowski has posed with her armpit hair grown for the September issue of Harper's BAZAAR, and wrote a personal essay explaining that there's more to her gender identity than meets the eye.

She began her essay by writing: "I'm a cis white woman. I'm well aware of the privilege I receive as someone who is heteronormative, and I don't pretend to act like my identity hasn't made some things easier for me."

A self-proclaimed "staunch feminist" the 28-year-old said she was less than flattered when she was described as "hyper femme." This implied that her femininity was extreme (and therefore deliberate). In short, it was a description she simply couldn't relate to.

She said, "In my day-to-day life, I was not aware of being femme or masc or anything but just me."

However, on reflection, Ratajkowski realized that there wasn't necessarily anything wrong with being "occasionally hyper-feminine" and embracing this part of her sexuality actually empowers her. She continued, "I feel powerful when I'm feeling myself, and sometimes feeling myself means wearing a miniskirt. Sometimes it means wearing a giant hoodie and sweats."

That's why she decided to rock armpit hair in the photoshoot; to show she has the right to express herself in any way she sees fit. She said, "For me, body hair is another opportunity for women to exercise their ability to choose...On any given day, I tend to like to shave, but sometimes letting my body hair grow out is what makes me feel sexy."
