American Pie star Shannon Elizabeth stated on a recent podcast that "there'd be a problem" if the cult teen movie was released today.
The 49-year-old Texan actress played Czech exchange student Nadia in the 1999 flick, which followed the lives of four high school friends who try anything (and everything) to lose their virginity.
Spawning three sequels in 2001, 2003, and 2012, the movie also skyrocketed the career trajectories of several actors - including the iconic Jennifer Coolidge, who portrayed the original MILF.
As with any teen movie centered on young men in high school, you can expect that a wide range of topics will be discussed - including underage drinking, safe sex, masturbation, drugs, and even pornography. It's evident that Elizabeth believes these are just some of the many reasons why American Pie could cause major issues if it came out today.
Check out the trailer for American Pie:The actress made the revelation on the podcast Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum, saying (via The Independent) that: "If this had come out after the #MeToo movement, there would definitely be a problem. I think that it would have gone down differently."
She was referring to a specific scene in particular, one where the title character Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs) manages to score a study date with Nadia - the gorgeous foreign exchange student. As part of the plan he concocted with his friends, Jim sets up a secret webcam on his computer so that he can hopefully record himself losing his virginity to her once they enter his bedroom.
What ensues is an awkward scene whereby Jim accidentally broadcasts himself dancing in his underwear in front of Nadia to the whole school. Not only this, but Nadia gets a little handsy with herself while Jim is out of the room, meaning that this was also seen by everyone. While the scene is purely comedic, it does make many viewers wonder now how awful this invasion of privacy would have been if it had occurred in real life.
Many other scenes in the movies are a little uncomfortable - including several moments when young men attempt to take advantage of women while they're intoxicated, as well as parts of the film involving a sexual relationship between a teenage boy and a much older woman.
Seann William Scott - infamous for his role as the ever-annoying Stifler - has also said in the past that American Pie would not fare so well these days.
Speaking to the Jake's Takes podcast, the 46-year-old said that there's no real "appetite" for movies like that anymore. "You know, I was having a conversation with a friend the other day, I was like, 'You could never make American Piethese days.' Some of the stuff in that movie, you would get arrested and probably go to jail for a long time if you did it," he stated.
