The world of celebrity friendships often seems fickle. I mean, just take a look at Taylor Swift's revolving coterie of BFF's; sporting washboard abs and perfectly blow-dried hair, they don't exactly scream "friendly". Rather, they're more reminiscent of the "cool girls" of high-school, who wouldn't let you sit with them at lunch.
And it appears that some Hollywood insiders have had enough of it all. Entertainment industry wunderkind, Selena Gomez, has unfollowed hundreds of social media accounts. And let's just say, she's made it very clear where her allegiances lie.
Ouch. Look what you made her do.
Following her purported "break" from her on-again-off-again beau, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez has gone on a major Instagram purge, culling her follow list to just 36 people. She unfollowed her friend and photographer, Petra Collins, as well as Justin Bieber and her mother, Mandy Teefey.
The 25-year-old no longer follows her assistant, Theresa Mingus's account, as well as several others who we believed her to be her close friends, such as the Hadid sisters and fellow Disney veteran, Demi Lovato.
So who are the chosen ones? The majority of them are brands and companies that she works with, as well as fan accounts. The only 12 real people she follows are several of her close friends and fellow celebrities, such as Francia Raisa, Taylor Swift, Amy Schumer, Jessica Alba and Julia Michaels. She's also following the creative directors of Coach and Louis Vuitton, a stylist and her makeup artist.
Way to get a curated feed, eh?
While some Gomez-Bieber hopefuls have pointed out that Selena can't be broken up with the pop singer because she hasn't deleted any of her Instagram posts about him, including that birthday tribute, it's important to note that she still has photos of The Weeknd on her account. And we all know how that ended...
In the past, the 25-year-old has asserted that she's bewildered by her dominance on the photo-sharing platform. "As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out," she said. "It had become so consuming to me. It's what I woke up to and went to sleep to. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn't want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn't want to care about. I always end up feeling like shit when I look at Instagram. Which is why I'm kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit."
And it should also be noted that Selena doesn't even have the password to her own Instagram accounts. Like many celebrities, her Instagram presence is managed by her assistant, meaning that she may not have personally unfollowed her friends. The more likely explanation is that it's part of an overall brand strategy that her press team are in the midst of implementing.
How's that for a little drama on a Thursday afternoon?
