While some viewers praised Puth’s soulful interpretation of the anthem, others were not as impressed, with some even calling it the “worst national anthem in Super Bowl history.”
Accusations of lip-syncing gained significant attention online. One Twitter user remarked, "I know Charlie Puth is like a pitch-perfect guy but it sounded lip-synced and idk man I just think it should always be live #SuperBowl."
Another fan questioned, "Did Charlie Puth just lip sync the national anthem?" These comments fueled a wave of debate about whether Puth’s performance was truly live or pre-recorded.
Puth reflects on the performance and its intention
Following the mixed reactions, Puth took to his Instagram story to express his gratitude and reflect on his artistic choices for the performance.
He shared, "Thank you everyone for your kind words. It was an honor to sing The National Anthem. I wrote the arrangement in a very specific way to honor Whitney Houston—I hope that was heard. Thank you to the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, the Sainted Choir, the Color of Noize Orchestra, Steve Hackman, and Kenny G for joining me on stage. And thank you Adam Blackstone for writing such a beautiful choir part. I love music so much."
Puth explained that his arrangement was carefully crafted to honor Whitney Houston’s iconic rendition of the anthem, a performance that is widely regarded as one of the most memorable in Super Bowl history. He also took the opportunity to thank the talented collaborators who helped bring his vision to life.
Mixed reactions and Puth’s continued support
