People have been taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the recent revelation that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been secretly separated for the past seven years.
The couple, who wed in 1997, have seen their relationship undergo intense scrutiny, especially in recent years.
The Girls Trip star, 52, shared this new insight into her love life during an interview with People. She spoke in further detail about her Smith's relationship in an NBC News segment which becomes available later today.
According to the actress, she and her Oscar-winning husband, 55, have been leading separate lives as long ago as 2016. And so by the time the Oscars slap incident involving Smith and Chris Rock rolled around in 2022, they weren't actually together.
This is the moment Will Smith slapped Chris Rock:Upon hearing the news, fans were in disbelief that Smith essentially slapped the comic "for nothing" - given that they apparently weren't even together at the time.
One fan wrote: "So he smacked chris over that joke and they weren’t even together."
Another said: "So the slap was for nothing."
A third penned: "'Keep my wife’s name, out your mouth' um… something ain’t adding up."
A fourth commented: "All that drama at the oscars when they weren’t even together anymore."
Reflecting on the the incident, Pinkett Smith went on to say in her interview: "We've been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like."
News of their separation will come as a huge shock to fans, as the pair continued referring to each other as husband and wife over the last seven years.
Fans will remember that in 2020, Pinkett Smith admitted to having had an "entanglement" with singer August Alsina, which she spoke about in detail during a conversation on her Facebook show, Red Table Talk.
Pinkett Smith spoke out after Red Table Talk got canceled earlier this year.
Deadline reported at the time that the social media platform's parent company, Meta, was shutting down its Facebook Watch originals. This includes the Daytime Emmy-winning talk show - which was hosted by Pinkett Smith and featured both her daughter Willow Smith and mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris.
Since its launch in 2018, the wildly popular show has broadcast 129 episodes over five seasons, garnering 11 million followers across social media.
After the news was announced, Pinkett Smith spoke out about the situation in a statement on the show's Facebook page. "We are so grateful to have had such a beautiful partnership and we are sorry to see the entire team disband," it read. "We wish everyone well in their new journeys to come." The statement also that the show is "in talks of finding a new home."
