Christina Applegate has reportedly been hospitalized in Los Angeles, and the news comes just weeks after the actress made a devastating admission about the reality of living with multiple sclerosis.
According to TMZ, the 54-year-old was admitted to a hospital in late March and remains under medical care. It's unclear whether the stay is directly related to her MS diagnosis.
Her representative declined to confirm the details, telling media: "I have no comment whether she is in the hospital or what her medical treatments are.
"She's had a long history of complicated medical conditions that she has been refreshingly open about, as evidenced in her memoir and on her podcast."
The Married… With Children and Dead to Me star was first diagnosed with MS in 2021, and has been remarkably open about the toll it has taken on her body and her life ever since.
In a February interview with People ahead of the release of her memoir You With the Sad Eyes, Applegate revealed that she now spends the vast majority of her day in bed because the pain is simply too much.
The one thing she refuses to give up is driving her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie, to school.
"I want to take her; it's my favourite thing to do," she said.
"I tell myself, 'Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed.' And that's what I do."
By Applegate's own account, the severity of her condition has been staggering.
She has previously said she's been hospitalised more than 30 times since her diagnosis - often in what she describes as 'unimaginable pain'.
In January this year, she got emotional on her MeSsy podcast - which she co-hosts with fellow MS sufferer Jamie-Lynn Sigler - after reading a letter from a fan with a similar autoimmune condition.
It prompted her to open up about a recent flare-up and her fear that the disease may be 'taking' her.
She's also spoken about the impact on her relationship with her daughter, recalling how Sadie once told her: "I missed who you were before you got sick."
Applegate's response was as honest as it gets: "I miss who I was before I got sick too. Very much."
You With the Sad Eyes was released in March and quickly landed on the New York Times Bestsellers list.
It covers Applegate's turbulent childhood growing up in Laurel Canyon with a mother battling heroin addiction, her rise to fame on Married… With Children, and her life since the MS diagnosis changed everything.
She told People the illness had at least given her something unexpected - time to reflect.
"For a long time, it felt impossible to find the meaning in everything I've been through," she said.
"But for the first time in my life, I've been able to stop and reflect."
At the time of writing, there's been no further update on Applegate's condition or when she might be discharged.
Her MeSsy podcast recently went on hiatus, with Sigler telling listeners that both hosts were 'busy with their books', although it now seems there may have been more to the pause than that.
Between the memoir, the podcast, and a new platform she's launching called Next in MS, Applegate has turned a deeply difficult situation into something that has clearly resonated with a lot of people going through similar experiences.
There's been no word yet on when she'll next speak publicly - but given how open she's been throughout, it seems unlikely she'll stay quiet for long.
