Demi Lovato has said that "it's OK" if you accidentally misgender them - as long as your intentions are good.

The singer, 28, who recently came out as non-binary in May, made the revelation as part of an Instagram post for Nonbinary Awareness Week.

Demi uses they/them pronouns and explained that they understand that it's easy to misgender them, writing: "I often find that the change in pronouns can be confusing for some, and difficult to remember for others. It's all about your intention."

"If you misgender me - that's OK," Demi added. "I accidentally misgender myself sometimes! It's a huge transition to change the pronouns I've used for myself my entire life. And it's difficult to remember sometimes!"

Demi continued: "As long as you keep trying to respect my truth, and as long as I remember my truth, that shift will come naturally. I'm just grateful for your effort in trying to remember what means so much to my healing process."

The 'Cool For The Summer' singer then explained what their gender identity really means by reposting a series of slides by activist Matt Bernstein.

The last slide reads: "Nonbinary people deserve the right to exist without constantly explaining, justifying, and proving that they are real to people who refuse to accept that gender as we know it is changing."

"Over the past year and a half, I've been doing some healing and self-reflective work," they said on their podcast, 4D With Demi Lovato. "And through this work, I've had the revelation that I identify as nonbinary.

"With that said, I'll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them. I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am, and still am discovering."

While Demi has now admitted that it's okay to accidentally misgender them, it comes after they called Lizzo a "f***ing queen" for correcting a photographer who misgendered Demi earlier this month.

When Demi first came out as non-binary in May, they explained that they were making the public revelation "for those out there that haven't been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones."
