Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about a difficult decision she made as a mother - rehoming her dog, Princess Pippi Longstocking, after a scary incident involving her son.
Speaking during a screening of her new film Die My Love in New York, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that motherhood had completely shifted her perspective on pet ownership.
The 35-year-old shared that her beloved chihuahua "did not like New York," adding: "I lived on 1st and 67th just to be near the park for her."
Lawrence explains her decision to rehome her dog
The Hunger Games star, who shares three-year-old Cy and a second child born in 2024 with husband Cooke Maroney, admitted that an incident with one of her dogs biting her son deeply impacted how she views animals.
"One of them bit my son, and that made me want to obliterate every dog ever," she admitted, per Daily Mail. "After I had a kid, dogs became so scary, you know? It’s almost, like, I don’t recognize dogs right now. I just see them as a threat."
While she didn’t specify which dog was responsible, she confirmed that Princess Pippi Longstocking, whom she adopted in 2017, is safe, loved, and still part of the family, just from a safer distance.
In the same Q&A, Lawrence also confessed that she now finds herself more drawn to cats. “I have a cat and I feel like they're so misunderstood. They are a**holes and people who don't like that about cats are getting that that is what is so funny.”
Fans applaud “responsible” decision
Despite the heartbreaking nature of her story, fans online flooded to support Lawrence for putting her child’s safety first.
One Reddit user wrote: “Seems she was a responsible pet owner and mother and did what was best for everyone in the situation?”
Another echoed: “Good for her. So many people are in denial about what dogs can do to young children, even if they’re trained well."
A third added: "Seems like a rational decision after her son was bitten by a dog. And the dog lives with her parents so she can see her whenever."
Lawrence stars in Die My Love alongside Robert Pattinson, Sissy Spacek, LaKeith Stanfield, and Nick Nolte.
The film, directed by Lynne Ramsay, follows a woman suffering from severe postpartum depression and psychosis after the birth of her first child.
Despite critical acclaim for her performance, it was revealed this week that Lawrence was not nominated for the Actor Awards (formerly SAG Awards).
