Johnny Depp helped Eric Dane in final months before he died with beautiful gesture
In the months leading up to his tragic passing, Eric Dane, beloved for his role in Grey's Anatomy, found a helping hand in his longtime friend, actor Johnny Depp.
As the 53-year-old star battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Depp stepped in to ease his friend's financial concerns, allowing him to live "rent-free" in one of his Los Angeles properties.
A Lifeline for Eric Dane: Depp Opens His Home
Eric Dane was a long-time friend of Johnny Depp. The two met years ago through mutual friends, and as Dane’s health worsened, Depp offered him a place to stay in one of his homes situated above the iconic Sunset Strip.
A source close to Depp explained how the actor’s gesture was aimed at relieving Dane from unnecessary worries during such a challenging time, per the Daily Mail.
"Eric [had] one less thing to worry about," the insider said. "He was living basically rent-free in one of the homes Johnny owns above the Sunset Strip. He told Eric to pay whatever he could or — couldn't for rent."
The source continued: "Johnny wanted to do what he could to ease the financial burden," adding that Depp's support came during a time when Dane was fighting a difficult and progressive illness.

Eric Dane’s ALS Diagnosis and His Health Struggles
Eric Dane’s battle with ALS began in early 2024, when he noticed weakness in his right hand.
Initially attributing it to overuse or fatigue from texting, he later received a formal diagnosis in April of that year.
By June, he had lost the use of his right arm. ALS, known for its rapid progression, typically has a life expectancy of three to five years, and Dane’s condition declined swiftly, leaving him with limited mobility and strength.
Despite his diagnosis, Dane’s ex-wife and close friend, actress Rebecca Gayheart, remained a pillar of support throughout his journey.
The couple, who share two daughters, Billie (15) and Georgia (13), had been through their share of ups and downs before their divorce in 2018, after 14 years of marriage.
When Dane received his diagnosis, Gayheart paused the divorce proceedings and recommitted to standing by him during his difficult fight against ALS.
"We are best of friends. We are really close. We are great co-parents," Gayheart shared in an interview. "We really figured out the formula to staying a family... I think our kids are benefiting greatly from it and we are as well."
