Lip reader 'decodes' tense exchange between Rihanna and A$AP Rocky after Met Gala

People cannot stop talking about a viral video showing Rihanna and A$AP Rocky appearing to have a heated exchange after the 2026 Met Gala.

The clip, shared by TMZ, shows the couple sitting inside a vehicle while speaking to each other, with both stars looking noticeably serious.

The moment quickly sparked speculation online because it came shortly after the pair appeared affectionate at the event itself. Rihanna and Rocky had smiled together on the Met Gala carpet and stairs, and they were also seen kissing during the evening. However, the mood inside the car looked very different, leading many fans to wonder if the couple had been arguing.

Now, a lip-reading expert claims to have decoded what was allegedly said during the one-minute-and-five-second interaction, offering a possible explanation for the tense atmosphere caught on camera.

Lip reader breaks down the exchange

Nicola Hickling, a lip-reading expert and founder of the company LipReader, analyzed the footage for Casino.org.

According to Hickling’s analysis, Rihanna appeared to ask Rocky: “You don’t care for me, do you?” She claimed he responded: “Are you for real? You’re crazy. Can’t you see, c**p c**p.”

Hickling further alleged that the 'We Found Love' singer then told him: “Get out, I can’t be around you” before laughing mockingly. The expert said Rocky replied: “I’m done here.”

Rihanna then appeared to shoot back: “You’re done? I’m done. I’m tired. Now you’re done, you can drop me.”

According to Hickling, Rocky ended the conversation by saying: “You trying something, hey. Try.”

Body language expert weighs in

Body language expert Inbaal Honigman also shared her interpretation of the interaction while speaking on behalf of Casino.org.

“Rihanna is the one asking the questions, her eyes fixed on Rocky with determined focus. Looking straight ahead, he is caught in her gaze and cannot escape it. This direct eye contact is fearless, suggesting she is challenging him to answer,” Honigman told Showbiz Cheat Sheet.

“She shakes her head from side to side, clearly unhappy with his response. Her quizzical expression combines narrowed eyes with lightly pursed lips, signalling that she is looking for answers, not excuses.

"Rihanna does not take her eyes off him until he provides the information she wants. Her eye contact is intense, almost searing into her partner as he struggles to find the right words.”

Honigman also suggested Rihanna appeared upset and unwilling to accept deflection during the conversation.

“Rihanna’s chin is jutting forward, a gesture often associated with pride. It is possible that Rocky has hurt her pride, and that this is the subject of the discussion. She is not smiling at all, which suggests she is not interested in humor or deflection. She wants direct answers,” the expert said.

Experts say the interaction appeared confrontational

Honigman also analyzed Rocky’s body language during the exchange, claiming he appeared visibly uncomfortable throughout the interaction.

“Rocky’s eyebrows are raised into a triangular shape, communicating distress. This appears to be an argument he does not want to have. After unsuccessfully appealing to her empathy, he appears to look for a way to compose himself.

"The head turn acts as a blocking gesture, giving him a brief respite from the intensity of the situation and allowing him a degree of psychological privacy.”

The expert concluded: “[A$AP Rocky’s] discomfort is further evidenced by the way he fidgets with his clothing. Their interaction appears confrontational.”
