Former First Lady Michelle Obama has expressed her wish that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will "forgive" the British Royal Family, following their widely-publicized interview with Oprah Winfrey.

In an interview with Access Hollywood, the former First Lady of the United States spoke about her wish for Meghan Markle - who is a personal friend of hers - to heal the rift between herself and the other Royals in the wake of her and Harry's retirement from public life in early 2020.

Obama stated:

"My hope is that, when I think about what they’re going through, I think about the importance of family and I just pray that there is forgiveness and there is clarity and love and resolve at some point in time.

"Because there’s nothing more important than family."

She also spoke about her own family, and former president Barack Obama's role as a father and as a husband.

She said: "First of all, he loves his daughters with all of his heart. He wants nothing but the best for them."

She continued: "But more importantly, he knows how smart and capable they are as young women and he treats them as equals. They still have discipline and rules and respect, but he encourages them in everything they do.

"And that’s all you want from a dad, not just for a girl dad, but any dad who is involved and engaged and shows love and stability, and consistency. That’s the kind of dad he is."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's interview with Oprah Winfrey provoked widespread shock after airing on CBS on Sunday, March 7.

In it, Markle spoke about the pressures of going from being a celebrity actor to becoming a member of the British nobility, her struggles with her mental health, and the scrutiny she fell under from the British tabloid media.

Markle also seemed to suggest that her family had been the victim of racial prejudice from an unnamed member of the Royals, who allegedly raised "concerns" with Harry over the color of their unborn child's skin.

However, Prince William has responded to the interview and insisted that the British monarchy is "very much not a racist family".
