Olivia Wilde has explained why decided to wear a white "wedding dress" to the actual ceremony - despite doing so typically being a big wedding no-no.

Wilde's name has been cropping up time and time again in the headlines over the last couple of years - particularly since she and her ex-partner, Jason Sudeikis, announced their separation in November 2020.

And last April, it became clear that the two exes were not on good terms as the House alum was abruptly served custody documents from Sudeikis's legal rep on stage at CinemaCon.

It took place in front of hundreds of film industry executives and saw the actress interrupted during a presentation as she was handed a mysterious manilla envelope, which she went on to open on stage.

When the moment went viral, Jason's rep said he had "no prior knowledge" that Wilde would be served in public.

Wilde's most recent relationship was with British pop star Harry Styles, with whom she called it quits in November last year after nearly two years together.

So there weren't any wedding bells for those two - but love continues to be in the air for other couples.

In fact, last weekend, the Booksmart director, 39, attended a wedding, which has since gotten people talking - and for good reason: she chose to wear a white gown to the ceremony!

Needless to say, fans weren't best pleased at the faux pas.

"She's so embarrassing I-" one person tweeted.

"Olivia Wilde is just a messy b***h I see. I don't think it's cute to wear an actual wedding dress to someone else's wedding just to make a toast about it. The more I learn about her the less I like her," another added.

A guest at the wedding of her friends Colton Underwood and Jordan C. Brown, Wilde told her fans afterwards that she wore the dress as a "joke" she planned to make during her toast at the wedding reception.

Taking to her Instagram story, Wilde posted an image of herself in the delicate silk Nili Lotan number, writing: "Wore a wedding dress to a wedding just so I could make a joke about it in my toast."

And one of the grooms has since taken to his own Instagram story to applaud his friend for making her toast "funnier" by wearing a white dress at a wedding with no bride.

In response to his story, a fan defended Wilde, writing: "I can't believe the groom had to speak out, to defend Olivia because once again people were being disgusting…This man and his husband were not offended at all that she wore a wedding dress, they found it funny !! Olivia is their friend ! LEAVE THIS WOMAN ALONE !"

Another person chimed in: "Olivia Wilde is that close to her friend that she gave a speech at his wedding and people think they know how they would feel about the dress better than her??? Stop projecting your own insecurities. they loved it. your opinion is literally irrelevant."
