Paris Hilton's 'Beauty and the Beast' Halloween costume causes controversy over small detail
Paris Hilton's Halloween costume has sparked backlash over one small detail.
On Monday (October 26), the 45-year-old posted a series of images of her family's Beauty and the Beast-inspired photo shoot for the spooky season.
Hilton cosplayed as Belle, while her husband, Carter Reum, dressed as the Beast, her son Phoenix, three, was a mini Lumière, and daughter London, two, transformed into talking teacup Chip.
"My life is a fairytale," she penned in her Instagram caption, "and the magic never ends."
The Simple Life alum also posted a behind-the-scenes video of the family's fun shoot day, quipping: "The reality of a #Halloween shoot with two toddlers."
The clip shows her children jumping under her hoop skirt, which they call "a tent".
A voice in the back can also be heard saying to Phoenix: "If you’re super good for this, you’re gonna get to meet a gecko! Do you wanna meet a gecko and hold it?"
This line clearly worked, as Hilton joked that Phoenix, who did get to meet a gecko, and London were in their "locked-in era" and copied their mom’s poses.
Online users questioned why Hilton dressed as Belle
Despite sharing wholesome Halloween moments, Hilton faced criticism from some online users for taking the lead role as Belle instead of her daughter.
"Why not let your daughter be Belle? Attention has to be on her! Poor little girl!" one disgruntled user said.
"Cute but maybe the kids should have been belle and beast and the adults the side dishes I mean it is a kids holiday," another commenter slammed.
A third added: "I think the kids should be the center of attention during this holiday. Let the daughter be the princess and the son the prince."
A fourth user took the criticism further, stating: "And this is 100% the reason she bought these babies - to literally play dressing up."
The backlash also prompted a response from Instagram user @ashleymlindsay, who posted a video addressing confusion about Hilton's daughter's costume.
Some viewers have mistakenly identified London as Mrs. Potts, who was voiced by Angela Lansbury in the animated movie, when she was actually Chip, Mrs. Potts’ teacup child.
The reality TV star eventually issued a response, sharing that Beauty and the Beast is one of the children's "favorite movies," and adding that her daughter said Chip "was her favorite character in the movie".
Last month, Hilton shared an insight into her life as a mother of two, telling US Weekly: "I feel like I, in my life, I do so many things.
"I’m a mom, I’m a businesswoman, I’m a DJ, I’m a pop star, I’m an artist. I do it all. So there’s always whatever vibe or theme is happening for the day, but for me, I’m a sliving mom, so I’ll always be, you know, dressing the way I do and having fun with it. But then also, like, the hot housewife vibes as well," she added.
She also said that her daughter already has a love of fashion and is constantly raiding her closet.
"She’s only two and a half, and she’s coming in my closet, trying to try on my shoes now, wearing the purses, the outfits," she said. "She’s already trying, and she’s a mini fashionista. She’s like a mini me. She’s so gorgeous, so sweet, and she can raid my closet whenever she likes.
"She is the luckiest girl in the world because [of] the amount of clothes that she’s going to have, and I tell her that every day when I’m trying something on. She’s like, 'Mama, I love that.' I’m like, 'Honey, this is going to be all yours one day, so you are a very, very lucky girl,'" she added.
