Prince Harry has revealed that he and Meghan Markle "pretended" not to know each other on their first date in a grocery store.

Speaking on Dax Shepard's podcast, Armchair Expert, the 33-year-old Duke of Sussex said when he and his now-wife first started dating, they both wanted to keep their blossoming romance under wraps.

He recalled: "The first time Meghan and I met up for her to come and stay with me, we met up in a supermarket in London, pretending we didn’t know each other, texting each other from the other side of the aisles."

He continued: "There are people looking at me, giving me all these weird looks, and coming up to me and saying 'hi'.

"I texted her saying 'is this the right one', and she said 'no you want parchment paper', and I’m like, 'Where's the parchment paper? I had a baseball cap on, looking down at the floor, trying to stay incognito. It's amazing how much chewing gum you see, it's a mess!"

Elsewhere during the chat, Harry talked about mental health in the wake of revelations that Meghan had experienced suicidal thoughts as a senior royal.

Re-watch Piers Morgan's controversial take on the pair's Oprah interview:

He said: "Unfortunately in today’s world, [mental health] is quite a sensitive subject. Not just for the people who are sharing, but ultimately the subject matter itself has to be handled with care.

"There can be humor, there can be everything else, but when it ends up getting weaponized by certain people, you can never predict it. Although I now probably can. That doesn’t’ worry me anymore.

"I used to be fearful of it, but now the same groups of people who come at it so negatively, or try and turn it against you or weaponize it, and so affect so many millions of people from doing so, it actually encourages me to speak out more."

Meghan and Harry announced their decision to step down as senior royals in January 2020. More than a year later, in March 2021, the pair sat down with Oprah Winfrey to discuss their time in the palace.

The interview brought about a slew of allegations against the Royal Family, a major one being that Meghan was told that she could not seek help for her depression as "it wouldn't be good for the institution."

Since then, the pair have moved to Montecito, California, with their two-year-old son Archie. The pair are expecting a baby girl later this year.
