Viewers baffled over who the camera panned to when Timothée Chalamet thanked his ‘partner of 3 years’
Timothée Chalamet had one of the big moments at last night’s Critics Choice Awards, but it was a hilarious camera slip that got everyone talking.
The 30-year-old won Best Actor for his role in Marty Supreme, beating strong contenders including Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Edgerton, Ethan Hawke, Michael B. Jordan and Wagner Moura. Fans were thrilled for his win, but they were soon laughing online at an awkward bit of live television.
As Chalamet thanked people who helped him on his journey, including his team and Marty Supreme director Josh Safdie, he moved into a personal shoutout that was meant to be sweet. What followed was a comic moment that had viewers at home in stitches and social media buzzing.
Camera goes to the wrong person during speech
Chalamet spoke warmly to the crowd about his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, who was in attendance.
He said "And lastly, I'll just say, thank you to my partner of three years. Thank you for our foundation. I love you. I couldn't do this without you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much." But as he said it, the camera did not show Jenner.
Instead, the screen cut to Michael B. Jordan, who had just lost the Best Actor award. The timing made it look like Chalamet might have been talking about Jordan, and the American actor’s deadpan stare as the camera lingered only made the moment funnier.
Eventually the broadcast did show Jenner, and she could be seen mouthing back "I love you, too" from the audience.
Social media reacts to the mix-up
Fans were quick to react online, turning the mix up into instant memes.
One X user pointed out "The camera being on michael b jordan while timothee says thank you to my partner of three years."
Another added "love how he says thank you to my partner of three years and it jumps to michael b jordan." A third wrote "Addicted to the way the cut to Michael b Jordan implies he is Timmy’s partner of 3 years."
Over on Reddit, one viewer joked "They kept that camera on Michael B Jordan for so long I almost thought they were partners for 3 years lol."
That mix-up made an already memorable acceptance speech even more talked about, and fans of both stars found plenty to laugh about online after the show.
