Whoopi Goldberg says it's 'sad' to see a US president under indictment
Whoopi Goldberg has admitted to feeling "sad" that Donald Trump has been hit with criminal charges - the first time in US history for a president either former or current.
On Tuesday, (April 4), the former president, 76, pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
The erstwhile The Apprentice host organized a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels - through his lawyer Michael Cohen - around the end of his 2016 presidential campaign.
Per The Guardian, Trump does not deny arranging for Cohen to send Daniels the six-figure sum in order to buy her silence over an alleged extramarital affair, which he says never took place.
In pleading not guilty to the 34 counts, he denies falsifying business records.
Though hush money in connection with keeping an extramarital affair under wraps is not against the law, when Trump reimbursed Cohen, the record for the payment reportedly stated it was for legal fees. According to prosecutors, this is tantamount to Trump falsifying business records, which is a criminal act in the state of New York.
Trump has repeatedly denied claims that he had an affair with Daniels.
In any case, controversial TV personality Goldberg has shared her thoughts amid Trump's troubles with the law.
The Color Purple actor, 67, was tasked with introducing the much-discussed topic on The View as she asked her co-hosts: "How are you feeling about a historic day? You know, it’s sad, but I'm glad something’s happening," via The Independent.
Joy Behar refuted the notion that it was a "sad" day for the country, saying: "It’s not sad, what’s sad?"
"Well, I’m sad that, in that [it is] an American president," Goldberg explained.
"That he’s being called in for questioning et cetera and he’s being indicted because he committed certain crimes is not sad, that’s American justice," Behar responded.
"It’s the first time in any of our lifetimes, and I don’t think any of us could have really imagined this," Goldberg added.
Sunny Hostin then chimed in to say that she "imagined it," to which Goldberg replied: "With him, no, but I mean with other presidents."
